Adecco Coffee Chats: Coping with workplace stress and burnout

For many of us, our jobs can be highly stressful due to the amount of work we must complete. The key here is to ensure that we have effective coping mechanisms in place to deal with the stress we face. Adopting healthy, simple coping strategies will help free up much of the mental space we need to lead a more productive and balanced life, without sacrificing the quality of our work.

First, do not let other people's narratives affect your own. You may often find yourself in a high-pressure environment where overworking is idealized and almost considered normal. It's easy to be swayed by the narratives of those around you who seem to wear their long hours as a badge of honor It's crucial to take a step back, assess your values, and always stick to the priorities you've set for your life.

Secondly, schedule meetings with yourself. Our schedules often become packed with numerous tasks that demand our attention. These tasks can end up consuming more time than we'd like. It's essential to set aside blocks of time for self-reflection, assessing your current progress, and identifying areas for improvement. Pulling back from constant action and developing a macro-level perspective on things can be beneficial. The time blocks you allocate for yourself don't necessarily need specific objectives; they can be adaptable and flexible. The crucial aspect is ensuring that you have these non-negotiable time blocks for yourself.

Lastly, put things into perspective. Often, half of the concerns we worry about never materialize. Many of the challenges we face, such as impending deadlines, may not be as significant when considered within the grand scheme of things. It is thus important to prioritize your health and well-being, which will contribute to a happier, healthier future.?
