Addressing the Opioid Crisis: A Mother’s Journey
CWC Alliance | Christopher Wolf Crusade
CWC Alliance aims to prevent opioid addiction before it begins by rewriting the narrative surrounding opioid misuse.
In a recent interview on NPR’s TED Hour Radio with Amy Baxter, CWC founder, Cammie Wolf Rice, shares the tragic story of her son, Christopher, who fell victim to opioid addiction, a crisis many families face but few discuss openly. "How can I warn people? How can we stop this in hospitals?" she asked herself, driven by the desire to prevent others from experiencing the same pain.
Cammie vividly recalls Christopher returning home from the hospital with a severe injury and no warning about the addictive potential of the medications he was prescribed. "When you're on oxycontin, you can become addicted with one prescription," she notes. Unfortunately, neither she nor Christopher were aware of this risk that comes with prescription opioids.
Christopher, a disciplined, academically gifted young man with dreams of becoming a Navy SEAL, spiraled into addiction. Despite his accomplishments, including graduating from college, he couldn’t break free from the opioids. "He came to me and said, 'Mom, I need this medicine just like you need air to breathe,'" Cammie remembers.
After a 14-year battle involving multiple rehabs, Christopher tragically overdosed in 2016. The stigma surrounding addiction made it even harder for Cammie to cope with her loss. "It took me two years to even talk to my family because of the stigma," she shares, highlighting the societal judgment that adds to the grief.
Realizing the importance of breaking the silence, Cammie founded the Christopher Wolf Crusade (CWC Alliance). Her innovative solution, the Life Care Specialist, aims to guide patients through their pain management journey. "We use coaches for everything in our society, except for when you're in a health crisis," she observes.

Life Care Specialists educate patients on their prescribed pain medications, provide non-narcotic pain management techniques, and offer emotional support. "Sometimes they need somebody to validate their pain and frustrations," Cammie explains. These specialists ensure patients understand the risks of opioids and assist with safe medication disposal.
Starting in orthopedic trauma, where young people often encounter opioids for the first time, the initiative has expanded to multiple departments and rural hospitals. Cammie believes that if Christopher had a Life Care Specialist, he might still be alive today. "I feel like we're saving lives one patient at a time," she asserts.
Cammie's story and her work with the CWC Alliance underscore the urgent need for comprehensive pain management education and support in hospitals. Her efforts, alongside those of pain specialist Dr. Amy Baxter, aim to transform how the healthcare system addresses opioid use, ultimately preventing addiction and saving lives.
