Addressing Diversity - Tips for DEI Success in the Workplace

Diversity, equity, and inclusion have become imperative to a company’s culture. With creating inviting and accepting cultures more critical than ever, fostering a society that makes people from different backgrounds look at one another as equals is a key driver for what makes your company memorable. Increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion aren’t just about hiring more women, BIPOC, non-binary, or neurodiverse professionals to your team. It is about creating a place that ensures every employee feels empowered, trusted, and involved in the business.

Proven Strategies that Improve DEI in the Workplace

Seeing DEI as a critical component of a business

First and foremost, identify Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion as a priority in your business strategy. Establishing clear goals and performance measures will reap long-term benefits for an organization, including an increase in revenue, a larger readiness for innovation, and enhanced employee retention. Ensure that every organization member supports and promotes Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, through regular internal communications, workshops, events, and more.

Providing training to keep employees up to date

It is important to ensure that diversity and unconscious bias training are required when onboarding into a new position. However, many companies stop from the initial touch point and fail to continue training later. Make DEI training a priority to stimulate behavioral change amongst new and tenured staff.

Have accountability among senior leaders and executives

A company’s DEI strategy will only have a long-term impact and reap the rewards if everyone who holds a leadership role holds space and time for it. Once goals and objectives are measured, optimal results will follow.

Create equal benefits and programs for all employees

A strong way to prioritize Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the workplace is by adequately supporting women who are caregivers. By evaluating what your company currently provides against what your staff needs, creating flexible schedules and helpful resources will allow those with caregiver responsibilities to have a proper work-life balance to focus on their work and children at home.
