Addressing the Challenges of Industrial IoT Deployments
The industrial IoT market is currently valued at around $194 billion and is expected to grow to around $286 billion in the next 5 years at a CAGR of 8% (Markets and Markets, June 2024). There are various segments in the IIoT market including manufacturing, energy and utilities, and transportation.? With nearly 300K factories in the U.S. and the vast majority of these not deploying any IIoT technologies, manufacturing is one of the strongest areas for IIoT growth.
?
The best candidates for IIoT in manufacturing are factories with complex machinery, high-value equipment requiring preventative maintenance, and production lines with variable demand. There are a number of significant challenges in deploying IIoT including the following:
?
?
Many of these challenges can be addressed with public/private cellular (LTE/5G) with LPWAN technologies (e.g. LoRAWAN) and secure IIoT gateway devices and sensors that can integrate with disparate factory equipment from older, legacy machines to modern automated machines.
