How Stress and Burnout Effect Employees
Numerous studies show of the major sources of stress, job stress is (66%), and it has escalated progressively over the past few decades. Job stress is associated with health illnesses and conditions.
According to a survey, job stress costs employers more than $300 billion in related costs a year due to absenteeism, tardiness, burnout, lower productivity, higher turnover, worker compensation and disability claims, accidents, safety issues, and medical expenses.
What is stress?
It basically breaks down to “the sense of having little or no control.” Unmet demands and expectations ultimately lead to a feeling of little or no control. Although you can’t control the situation, aka “stress” you can manage your reaction. Stress has a negative connotation and bad rep, but humans wouldn’t have survived without it.
Biology and Stress?
Stress is the body’s natural defense against predators and danger. It flushes the body with hormones to prepare systems to evade or confront threats. It is known as the “fight-or-flight” mechanism.

Not all stress is bad stress. Eustress is a positive form of stress, having a beneficial effect on health, motivation, performance, and emotional well-being. Eustress is the type of “positive” stress that keeps us vital and excited about life. Eustress is a type of stress that is important for us to have in our lives. It keeps us healthy and happy.
Chronic Stress
The more severe type of stress is called chronic stress—the type of stress that seems to be constant and psychologically or emotionally draining—is the most harmful to our health and well-being. This kind of chronic stress can trigger the stress response and keep it triggered for long periods, leaving us exhausted and close to burnout. According to the American Institute of Stress:

How you handle stress makes a big difference in how you feel. Prevention is the key to avoiding disease and illness. People aren’t taught how to manage stress well. Stress is a problem that affects every person on the entire planet and every aspect of life.
It primarily affects employee’s engagement, productivity, and morale. Therefore, it is in the company’s best interest to invest in teaching their employees stress management skills.
