Additive Layer Manufacturing digital chain : what about slicing tricks? #ALMTIP

Additive manufacturing files are generated using STL formats (STereoLithography). As you may know, preparing a part, before #3Dprinting it, requires some skills about "slicing".

I was preraring some traction samples to check material properties. I checked CAD file volumes of the part, after saving the STL file. I discovered "slight" discrepencies between initial file and STL file volumes.

I saved a second STL file playing with STL export MESHING parameters,

  • normal deviation (v1: 10° => v2: 0,4°)
  • surface deviation (v1: 0,5 => v2: 0,005 mm)

We investigated about the reasons why, such volume differences could appear.

CONCLUSIONS : Export STL files with a high level of meshing to stick to initial geometry of teh CAD file.

In a next future, what about next slicers output formats like *.AMF or *.3MF ? Do they remove these discrepencies ? Wait and see.

#ALMTIP : check STL export parameters before saving the files to avoid part weight issues.

Bonjour Adrien,? Le format d'export choisi ne change en rien l'algo de tesselation du logiciel 3D. Dans Rhinoceros V6 nous avons désormais l'Export .3MF mais les polygones générés sont les même que dans le? .STL. Par contre vous avez Rhinoceros de nombreuses options pour optimiser la tesselation afin d'optimsier vos polygones.? Voici la doc en ligne : https://wiki.mcneel.com/fr/rhino/meshfaq

Aurélien, your result is logical, because the meshes are flat mini-surfaces, and in your case all the inner curved parts behave like a string on an arc, so there is more material. Conversely, areas outside the model, ex. a football ball composed of facets (here hexagonal), the volume of the ball will be less than the volume of the theoretic spherical ball.
