Additional Protection Filing Your Individual Tax Return
As the 2025 tax season approaches, the IRS is urging taxpayers to enhance their identity security by signing up for an Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN). This six-digit number is essential for preventing tax-related identity theft, as it ensures that only the taxpayer can file a return using their Social Security or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number.
To obtain an IP PIN, taxpayers should create or log into their IRS Online Account before November 23, 2024, as the system will be unavailable for maintenance until early January 2025. Signing up early not only secures the taxpayer’s identity but also ensures they can electronically file their returns when the season opens.
The process involves identity verification, and both spouses and dependents can receive an IP PIN. Taxpayers must use their IP PIN for all federal tax returns, including prior years, and should share it only with the IRS and their tax preparer. For those unable to use the online method, alternative verification options are available.
This initiative is a proactive measure to safeguard personal and financial information, ensuring a smoother and more secure tax filing experience.
