Addition to Epic’s Fold

According to a May Klas Report, Epic was the only EHR vendor to experience a net market share increase in 2023. The analysis showed that Epic added 153 acute multispecialty hospitals and 28,788 beds to their portfolio last year. ??The report noted the acute care EHR market share in 2023 was: Epic at 39.1%, Oracle Health at 23.4% and Meditech at 16%.

One of the 19 new health systems recently joining the Epic “fold” is Beebe Healthcare (two-hospital, 210 bed, non-profit system) in Lewes, Sussex County, Delaware. ?Sussex County is the southernmost county in Delaware, and it produces the most poultry of any county in the US. As of the 2020 census, the population was 237,378, making it the state's second most populated county.

In the recent U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospital rankings Beebe Healthcare ranked No. 2 in Delaware. ?Only 12% of US hospitals earned a “Best Hospitals” ranking, a result of excelling at clinical outcomes, level of nursing care, and patient experience. Beebe already excels, but there is always room for improvement and a press release from them on July 17, 2024, announced:

“Beebe Healthcare is pleased to announce an agreement with leading healthcare software company Epic to transform the system’s electronic health record (EHR) platform to provide a more seamless, integrated care experience for patients in Sussex County. Epic’s innovative platform will allow Beebe to have one single, comprehensive and consolidated medical records system throughout all Beebe entities.”

David Tam, MD, CEO, "Epic is truly, in my opinion, the most important thing we can do to improve the quality and access of care to the people who live here in Sussex County,” Having its own Epic EHR Beebe will be able connect with private practices and federally qualified health centers to address social determinants and improve overall community health”, he said. The EHR will also help with physician recruitment as most medical residents train on Epic.

The health system will move from seven different EHRs to one. Beebe Healthcare currently uses Oracle Health (formerly Cerner) for inpatient and athenahealth for outpatient EHRs, The new EHR addresses items in? their strategic plan: access to care (through Epic's mobile capabilities); clinical excellence (by better analyzing different departments of the health system); and being a top employer (by giving staffers an easier-to-use platform).Patients will also be better able to connect their health data no matter where they are in the country.

The system plans to go live with the new EHR in November 2025. It is one of Beebe's biggest overall investments ($40-$50 million) in the past decade. Dr. Tam notes that “Despite the large upfront investment, the new EHR will save the health system money in the long run by turning off the other platforms”.

They used to be the best patient advocates. Now they bend to the will of health systems. Health systems that continue to eliminate features in MyChart which make healthcare easier for patients, and by creating apps based on decisions for the business and not patients care.
