Adding Street Medicine to Scope of Project for Federally Qualified Health Centers

Federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) provide comprehensive primary care, behavioral health, and support services to underserved populations. Last year, nearly 1,400 FQHCs provided care to over 31 million people across the U.S., including more than 1.4 million individuals experiencing homelessness. These health centers can offer street medicine if the service is listed under their scope of project, as approved by the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). To promote street medicine among FQHCs, HRSA recently added an FAQ to its compliance materials to reinforce the availability of this service, outlining how to document street medicine in the scope of project for health centers.

This tool provides a framework to help FQHCs incorporate street medicine services into their scope of project, making these services eligible for Medicaid and Medicare reimbursement. Health centers can use this tool to update their scope of project to include street medicine.
