Adding some strategy to my videos
Monday 12/9/19...
I've been thinking a lot about my video strategy lately. Sometimes it's easier to come up with content than others. However, I typically don't start thinking about what to post until it's time to hit record.
I feel like I'm just winging it and it doesn't feel very strategic. The best content I come up with is a story or an expansion of a thought based on recent conversation. A lot of the time that results in a more tactical conversation and advice that's much more actionable for everyone.
Naturally, that ends up being much more compelling content and gets a lot more engagement. When I have to think about what content to post, it ends up being very high level or mostly general advice.
I've been considering for a few weeks about switching from what I'm doing now - speaking directly to the camera - to pulling clips from recorded conversations.
When I talk into the camera, it just feels like I'm talking to myself. But when I'm having a conversation with someone, it's specific, it's natural, and a lot more helpful for that particular person.
If someone has a question, I'm sure other people have that same question too, so it's worth answering it for them before they even have to ask via video. I think I can make a bigger impact in this way.
The only problem with this strategy is the logistics of it. Hence why I've been thinking about it for weeks instead of acting on it. Recording calls takes up a lot of memory and I don't think my phone can handle it. What if I take the call from my phone?
Plus, reviewing recordings and editing can end up being more time-consuming than what I'm currently doing.
But I had a shower thought yesterday and came up with a fix for recording and won't know how much time it will take to edit until I give it a try. I can just record my calls via Zoom which is already set up and ready to go. In fact, I already have a call recorded that I can start dissecting today.
This is not a long term solution, but it allows me to start playing around with this new strategy. This also has the added benefit of forcing me to share video on all of my calls. Being able to see the person you're speaking with has always helped me build the relationship. That alone is worth it right there.
And if this strategy works well, reviewing & editing content could always be outsourced to give me back time. As always, these are just assumptions, so let's get testing!
