Is adding a few videos to your learning content enough for education?

I am seeing other learning providers adding videos to their learning content and thinking this is all it needs to address the needs of their learners. While it's great these providers of education have decided to change their content from mostly text on a screen, they still are not hitting all the key learning needs of the modern-day learner.

Research… shows that video, in most cases, is rarely enough for learning. … Video is great at showing processes, procedures, and real things moving in the real world, but it is poor on many other things, especially concepts, numbers, and abstract meaning. As a result of this, you need other types of technologies to support the modern-day learner. But there are some forms of videos that work and I will come to this soon.

You see, the hype around using loads of videos is the assumption that video is more engaging (in some ways it is) but..... learning engagement includes carrying out needed learning tasks and focusing on needed learning outcomes. These actions directly influence learning results so it's not enough to just use a video and stick a few questions at the end and consider this a job done.

To support learners your provision needs to hit the following learning styles

The main learning styles are (1) visual, relying on images and mindmaps, (2) auditory, using sound, music, and rhythms, (3) physical or learning by doing, (4) verbal, using speech and writing, (5) logical, relying on reasoning to help see the big picture, (6) social or group learning, and (7) solitary, i.e. learning alone or through self-study.

So what type of modern technologies improve learning and retention and support all learning styles

  • Let's start with 360° photos and videos. These are the type of videos you need. These allow learners to look around the setting and interact with the material. For example, at Immersify Education, you are able to move objects around on our videos to understand more about anatomy for example.
  • Personalization, allows your education setting to really understand the learning needs. Personalized learning is an educational approach that aims to customize learning for each student’s strengths, needs, skills, and interests. This helps engagement and retention.
  • Gamification in learning is one of my favorite technologies. Gamification in education improves motivation, and immediate feedback, and earning badges for completing the challenges successfully is strongly influential in increasing the students’ drive in engaging in these games, In addition to the social component of gamified learning, meaning your students gamify in groups, leads to loads of benefits on the brain function. As we know, engagement increases the retention of knowledge and this type of learning makes learning fun.
  • Augmented reality. Perhaps one of the most obvious benefits of augmented reality in education is increased student participation in the classroom. It helps students engage with the lesson, especially online learning. Some current methods of teaching don’t allow many students to actively engage with lessons. They become bored and fed up as a result. Which is common with online learning. AR is so powerful because encourages students to take the initiative in learning. Instead of relying solely on predetermined thinking patterns, the augmented reality learning experience stimulates broader thinking in the students beyond what the teacher may even want to teach. Which we need to encourage when educating our future workforce.
  • Artificial intelligence helps teachers create a positive learning environment for students. It can also help them to understand the needs of each individual student. It can help teachers identify students who need extra attention and help them with their homework. It can also help teachers keep track of the progress of their students, so they can determine whether or not a student is ready for exams.

So to conclude.....

We have never been so well positioned to support our learners, it's a wonderful time to be an educator. The technologies available not only support your students but also support anyone who delivers education. This is why at Immersify Education, we have developed and keep on developing our platform to support all I have mentioned above.

I think that the issue with predominantly utilising one medium for learning; videos, audio, etc. Is that the learning process for individuals is different. So, while videos and other means are great complementary material, it makes more sense to think the entire situation through - what subject is being taught, what type of video content is being shown, how closely does it match with other material, exercises, quizes, class notes, book etc. And then determine best approach.
