Addictions and Motivation

Addictions and Motivation

In today's world we need brief and focused treatment to help our clients who are struggling with addictive behaviors. I have been using Motivational interviewing in a brief and effective way with many of my adult clients. During sessions I ask them to name several key reasons they want to stay drug free and several negative consequences when they were abusing drugs or alcohol. I then summarize and highlight their reasons to stay sober. When appropriate, I also give them a compliment or positive affirmation as a form of support and encouragement. Most of my clients respond very well to this brief MI approach as they move through stages of recovery. Phil Feldman, PhD- For more written work by this author see: https://lnkd.in/d6R6j_A
