Addiction, a Poem

Writing poetry is a joy and passion I have had as long as I remember. It helps me wrap my head around concepts as the words come through me. The last few months I have seen so many of my clients be so hard on themselves. These times are truly like no other and boy can it be tempting to numb, self soothe and try to find peace ANY way possible. That is the reason I created my new free e-course and also the reason this latest poem came to be. I wanted to share it in case its words offer peace to anyone that can use some right now.?
PLEASE be kind to yourself if you are battling some addiction… beating yourself up will not make it any easier to stop a self sabotaging habit. After my poem I have listed 2 resources - my free class and another amazing resource I am involved in Self Worth Now - in case you can use a little guidance and help through this time. Sending much love and PLEASE if you need more help - seek it out - you are never alone. There are always resources and people that can help.?
Addiction - by Jenny 4-24-2024
Addiction gets so judged
When it truly is self soothing -
We are doing the best we can.
Often we have adapted?
Coping mechanisms
Self sabotage was NOT the plan.
Addictions have negative connotations
Focusing on the habits we cling to
That distract, fill a void, or numb
Usually causes more
Negative self talk
Can leave us saying we feel dumb.
But there is no use or help
In sitting in?
Guilt, blame and shame.
It is in recognizing
Why we CHOSE these behaviors
Finding emotions we can name.
No one feels good
In self-sabotage mode
And not living in their power.
Doing this habit or behavior
Brings some kind of calm or peace
When life feels overwhelming and sour.
We have all witnessed others
Struggle with addictions.
Sometimes it takes help to move forward.
Knowing we are worthy
Gives us freedom?
Clarity on what we WANT to move toward.?
The type of addiction we choose
Should not be judged by another
Each person has their own vice.
It would be so wonderful
If this was commonly recognized
If everyone decided to be nice.
Addictions can be shopping,?
Watching videos, our phones,
doing drugs or excessive drink.
Each has their own reasons and?
Trauma behind it
And needs a compassionate think.
When did you begin this behavior?
What is the root cause?
What is it you are needing?
Turning inward to?
Find these answers
Can stop the unnecessary bleeding.
Once we locate that emotion
We can show self compassion
Love ourselves for what we’ve been through.
We can ask how we can access that?
Lacking emotion in a healthier way
Find help and confidence to begin anew.
Are there conscious choices
We can make
When that need, emotion or trigger comes up?
How can we notice,?
refocus, refuel,?
Make a commitment to fill our own cup?
Gentleness is required.
We would not hurt
A loved one in pain.
We can decide to
Offer ourselves kindness and a new action
Knowing we have so much to gain.
In acknowledging our pain
Working through it
Allowing ourselves to grow
We can heal
Make healthier choices
Discover a new kind of flow.
There might be times
We go backward
Life is not a straight line
But as long as we?
Acknowledge this dance?
We will honestly be just fine.?
We can celebrate each time
We choose love
And make a better choice.
We have retrained our brain
Can live from a healed space
That is a reason to rejoice!?
