Addiction. It’s just a problem with our thinking

Addiction. It’s a problem with our thinking

Today is ‘Kick Butts Day’ a national day to empower youth to stand out and speak up against Tobacco. Go youth!

It feels like the right time to share some thoughts on addiction.

Most of us suffer from some type of addictive behaviour. We work too hard, we stay in our comfort zone, we hoard, we clean, we perfect, we are attached to our smartphone, to social media, can’t get by without that coffee, that cake ….

28 million of the UK population suffer from one of the big 5, potentially life-threatening addictions. My point, addiction is BIG. It’s sitting on our homes, it’s ugly, it’s destructive.

If only it was clear that addiction is just a problem with our thinking

Addicts don’t see that

-    the feelings they are trying to avoid are just fleeting

-    that the temporary buzz is NOT coming from ‘outside’, the; drinking, drug-taking, eating etc.

-    100% of our feelings come from our thinking

-    100% of our experience comes from the inside

-    Habitual thought patterns give rise to our habitual behaviour

-    Same thinking, same feelings stagnating. STUCK with our addiction

There is a simple solution. A rise in our consciousness, can suddenly shift our understanding.

Witness the alcoholic who on the birth of his first child suddenly sees the damage he is doing, that booze is not the answer, that it’s ok to feel.

The workaholic who in an instant, insightfully sees that her life is wonderful already, no need to keep chasing those goals, time to enjoy ‘what is’

When we see that the thoughts and emotions we are avoiding are energy, like water, we can let it simply pass through us. No need to resist. When we know that we are born OK, that there is no fixing to be done. That we already have everything we need.

Boom!

We all get stuck in unconscious behaviours

There is a better way

It’s simple

It’s not always easy

Addictions are just bad habits and can change at any time, if the person is open to changing them.

Thank heavens I'm awake. I still get bit by the overworking bug, but there is a huge difference in how I approach things now then 5 years ago and even 8-10 years ago.

Totally agree. I still can't come to understand how people can get so addicted to certain things. Why I say so? Because I have tested them but I could not bring myself to repeat the same thing over and again.
