Add a bit of funding to their resilience, then stir!

In a world that is constantly changing, the resilience of grassroots organizations and their team members is an invaluable asset. Resilience, the ability to withstand and recover from challenges, is often built through hard work, innovation, and perseverance. However, resilience alone is not always enough. To truly unlock the potential of resilient systems, emerging organisations need the right fuel: funding. With proper flexible and core funding, resilience can be amplified, creating lasting impacts that reverberate across society.

This is where the concept of adding funding to resilience comes into play. It’s not just about providing financial resources; it’s about strategically empowering resilient initiatives with the means to thrive and scale. When the right support is combined with resilience, the results can be transformative, and the potential for innovation and progress can soar.

The Power of Resilience

Resilience is often tested in times of crisis, whether it’s a natural disaster, a global pandemic, or an economic downturn. However, resilience is not solely about bouncing back from adversity; it’s about building the strength and flexibility to adapt and thrive, regardless of external challenges. Organizations and communities that embody resilience are often able to innovate and find new ways to create solutions, making them essential players in the long-term sustainability of our world.

However, resilient systems may not always have the capacity to fully capitalize on their potential. Too often, they are stifled by limited resources, inadequate infrastructure, a lack of a permanent space for office use and other challenges affecting emerging organisations in Africa.

Funding: The Catalyst for Growth

Imagine a community that has been hit hard by a natural disaster but has a resilient network of local organizations that can rally together, providing support, shelter, and aid. These organizations are designed to withstand disruptions and offer stability, but all this will still require financial resources to be fully effective. Funding can ensure that these organizations have the infrastructure, tools, and trained personnel necessary to provide assistance at a larger scale, while also fostering long-term recovery and growth.

Funding acts as a catalyst, turning resilient frameworks into thriving systems that benefit individuals, businesses, and communities. With sufficient investment, resilient organizations can grow, scale, and amplify their impact, creating a ripple effect that helps others build their resilience too.

The Strategy: A Balanced Approach

The key to effective funding lies in the approach. Funding should not simply be handed out in a one-time donation or grant. Instead, it should be strategically allocated, with a focus on sustainable growth. Rather than a reactive approach that only funds in the face of immediate crises, investment should be proactive and forward-thinking, enabling resilient organizations to scale and innovate even in calm times. I am of the view that a transactional relationship will actually destroy an organization's long-term thinking.

Think of it as adding the right ingredients to a recipe. Resilience is the base, the foundation—but without the right amount of funding, it may not reach its full potential. Just like you wouldn’t bake a cake without flour, you cannot expect resilient systems to thrive without financial backing. But funding alone isn't enough either. Like stirring the ingredients together, the strategy, collaboration, and careful planning behind the distribution of resources make all the difference in the outcome.

Stirring the Pot: The Role of Collaboration

While funding is essential, it’s important to recognize that collaboration amplifies its effects. Resilient systems thrive when they work together, pooling resources and expertise for mutual benefit. Governments, non-profit organizations, and private sector companies all have a role to play in ensuring that funding reaches the right hands and is used effectively. Let's put the resources towards the rightful people, the grassroots leaders and their organisations.

Moving into 2025......

Resilience is the spark that allows systems to endure, adapt, and innovate, while funding is the fuel that keeps them going. Adding funding to resilient initiatives creates the conditions for transformative change, empowering organizations and communities to not only recover but to thrive. But just like any successful recipe, the key is balance, adding enough resources, combining them strategically, and stirring in the right partnerships and collaboration to ensure lasting impact.
