Adaptive Learning Technology changes everything about education.

Adaptive Learning Technology changes everything about education.

I am struck by the fact that although there is significant innovation and progress in the actual technology of Artificial Intelligence augmented Adaptive Learning Technology (ALT), little attention is being paid to how disruptive this technology will be when implemented in the educational environment.

If you project the implications of these ALT systems to their logical conclusions, ultimately you begin to suspect that:

-      Classrooms as we know them will be eradicated.

-      There will be no such things as grades, only the achievement of the mastery of a topic.

-      Class levels predicated upon age are eliminated, the “class level” is determined by the achievement of mastery, at whatever age it is attained.

-      Every student has their own personalized, self-paced educational environment. Achievement of mastery is no longer tied to pre-defined timelines such as “semester” or “course length”. Mastery takes whatever time it takes.

-      The ALT takes on the role of a student dedicated teachers assistant, and the teacher of today takes on the role of a mentor by providing inspiration, enthusiasm, excitement and assistance in gaining deeps insights in the subject area. The teacher is augmented by Subject Matter Educational Experts (SMEE’s) who can step in and provide additional student support.

-      Lifelong learning is not an option, it is an expectation.

-      The “system” knows how you learn, when you learn and supplements your daily activities with supportive educational materials.

-      Academic degrees may require ongoing “certification” or similar based upon the increasingly fast paced nature of change in most all disciplines.

And here is a frightening thought: the “system” begins to know what your personal learning limitations may be and adjusts the learning thresholds and perhaps even societies expectations accordingly.

And this is just a short list of this technology’s potential tsunami like impact.

As this technology is integrated into our educational / training implementations, the rapidly shifting roles of humans and ALT in education will need to be addressed. Things will never be the same again.

Your thoughts?

Unfortunately the state education systems seems to be quity sluggish when it comes to innovations like AI. I even know of distance learning universities that shy away from "too much" modernization. I think AI can help in all areas of education, but I am missing something else: What about the actual transfer of knowledge, the core task of the teacher? I think AI can and should have an impact here as well. After all, there are enough countries without established education systems. Digital learning systems can create equal opportunities! And even if no software in this world can replace a good teacher, it can definitely replace an average one, but especially a non-existent one. This is my mission. Education for all, free, efficient (hopefully with the help of AI) and with a portion of fun.

people learn in different contexts and online learning is one, that idea becomes more and more important. BUt e also learn by just talking with somebody ( not necessarily online), to wander in our mind or in the forest ;-). This is all learning moments that can't be captured by technology. Technology can help sharpen the skills of problem-solving and of course you can take it with you offline. I'm not afraid of technology. It is a tool, but I'm more afraid of the new boxes people tend to fall into if they simply replace the "traditional" education ( of which I'm not a great fan). The danger is the humans attitude towards tools and technology...

This is a great challenge and it seems like the only way to keep up with the fast-paced technological progress. However, I don't understand how is it possible for a machine to predict our personal learning limitations. Beginning for the basics: what "learning" even means?
