Understanding the Depth of Inner Strength
"My resilience feels only skin deep…” This sentiment, echoed by many in their leadership journey, often reflects a profound inner turbulence rather than a decrease in resilience. Bruce Feiler in his book ‘Life is in the Transitions’ illuminates this concept well; he suggests that throughout our lives, we encounter 3 to 5 ‘major quakes’ and numerous ‘mini quakes’. These quakes test our resilience and, more crucially, they test the very foundations of our identity and values—our inner strength.
The Real Challenge: When Goals Shift and Ideals Shake
In our pursuit of goals, we often envision a perfect pathway and outcome. We invest time, money, energy, and emotion, attaching our expectations and self-identity tightly to these aspirations. But what happens when these goals shift, change form, or disappear? It isn't just a setback; it's a fundamental shake-up of who we are and what we value. "I feel like I’m 16-17 years old again, learning all over again..." captures the vulnerability we face during such transformative periods.
Defining Inner Strength: More Than Mere Resilience
Inner strength is not merely about bouncing back; it's about the deep, foundational qualities that determine HOW we bounce back. It encompasses our mental power, endurance, willpower, courage, self-confidence, and self-discipline. Inner strength is what remains after the quake has passed—it's what shapes our ability to not just recover but to transform recovery into opportunity.
Seven Steps to Cultivate Inner Strength Using #ProjectMe Pathway:
Final Thoughts: The Unbreakable Leader
Does everyone have inner strength? Absolutely, but it requires cultivation and nurturing. The characteristics of inner strength—resilience, determination, self-awareness—are universally attainable, yet uniquely developed. Shakespeare rightly said, "The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away." Finding and fortifying your inner strength is indeed a gift—not just to oneself but to all those we lead and influence.

6 个月Very interesting Laura Toop - the issue for me is, and maybe Bruce covers this in his book, when you get your first ‘quake’ how do you navigate through it - someone who has experienced major quakes and mini quakes can probably navigate better through the next one but what happens if it’s the first quake or the first major quake? And for me goals are all about the process not the destination - the learning and insights you achieve along the way is invaluable.

6 个月Hi Laura. Very true and sound advice. My own experience over many years is that life does not according to your plan, but it happens anyway. Don't waste time and emotional energy pondering the past reasons for the current state. They won't change anything. Don't tackle problems when you are fatigued. Go to bed early, get a great rest, and revisit the next morning. The problem seems less concerning, and more solutions pop up. I also strongly trust my faith to guide me through those troubled times. Another interesting observation is that when looking back over our graph-line of life, we always remember the good times more readily than the bad times. Life was not meant to be easy.

6 个月Laura Toop it’s amazing how we often think that getting through this is a linear path with no twists or turns or setbacks. Chaos is inevitable isn’t it in life and to be adaptive and resilient are like what you say necessary to move our lives forward without compromise to ensure success ????not always easy though ??
