Adapting to Thrive: My Journey with Bangkit 2024

Embarking on the Bangkit 2024 program was like setting sail into uncharted waters. As someone who was juggling a full-time job and academic commitments, I knew that this journey would require me to stretch beyond my comfort zones. Little did I know that it would transform not just my skills but also my ways of interacting, achieving, learning, working, and thinking. Here's how I navigated these five facets of adaptability during my time with Bangkit.
1. Adapting My Ways of Interacting
From the very beginning, Bangkit set the tone for a global learning environment by using English as the primary medium of communication. While I had a basic proficiency in English, immersing myself entirely in the language was a new experience. Interactive Learning Sessions (ILTs) were particularly challenging. Asking questions and engaging in discussions required me to think and respond quickly in English.
Initially, I felt hesitant to speak up during sessions, fearing that my language skills weren't up to par. However, I realized that effective communication was crucial not only for my learning but also for building relationships with peers and instructors. To adapt, I started practicing English outside of the sessions. I engaged in language exchange meetups and used language learning apps to improve my fluency.
Gradually, I became more comfortable participating in discussions. I began asking questions, sharing insights, and even helping others who were facing similar challenges. This shift not only improved my language skills but also enhanced my confidence. By stepping out of my comfort zone, I forged meaningful connections and became an active member of the Bangkit community.
2. Adapting My Ways of Achieving
Balancing the rigorous demands of the Bangkit program with my existing job and academic responsibilities was no small feat. The program's intensive schedule and tight deadlines meant that time management became a critical skill. There were moments when I felt overwhelmed by the workload, questioning whether I could meet all my commitments.
The Time Management lessons from ILT 2 were a game-changer. I learned about prioritizing tasks, setting realistic goals, and identifying peak productivity periods. An interesting revelation was understanding my "chronotype"—discovering that I am a "dolphin," someone with an irregular sleep pattern and peak productivity at unconventional times.
Armed with this knowledge, I restructured my daily routine. I allocated high-focus tasks during my most productive hours and reserved less demanding activities for when my energy levels dipped. Tools like digital calendars and task management apps became indispensable. I also learned the importance of setting boundaries, ensuring that I dedicated time for rest and self-care to prevent burnout.
By adapting my approach to achieving goals, I managed to meet the program's demands without compromising my job performance or academic progress. This experience reinforced the value of strategic planning and the power of self-awareness in maximizing productivity.
3. Adapting My Ways of Learning
The Bangkit curriculum was intensive, offering a wealth of courses in a condensed timeframe. The sheer volume of content, coupled with tight deadlines, required me to adapt my learning strategies significantly. Passive learning was not an option; I needed to engage deeply with the material to keep pace.
The concept of a Growth Mindset, introduced in ILT 1, became the cornerstone of my learning approach. Embracing the idea that abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work shifted my perspective. Instead of feeling discouraged by challenging topics, I saw them as opportunities to expand my knowledge.
I adopted active learning techniques, such as self-quizzing, teaching concepts to peers, and applying theories to practical projects. The program's emphasis on practical skills, like creating Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) networks, setting up databases, and accessing Virtual Machines (VMs) via SSH, allowed me to apply what I learned immediately.
Moreover, the lessons on Energy and Time Management from ILT 2 helped me optimize my study sessions. Understanding my energy patterns enabled me to schedule learning activities when I was most alert, enhancing retention and comprehension.
This adaptive learning approach spilled over into other areas of my life. I found myself applying new skills to my college assignments and even at work. For instance, I utilized Google Cloud to create a virtual environment for experimenting with deployments, which added a new dimension to my projects.
4. Adapting My Ways of Working
Adapting to Bangkit's workflow required a shift in how I managed tasks and collaborated with others. The program heavily relied on tools like Google Calendar for timeline management, which was different from my usual practices. Initially, syncing multiple calendars and keeping track of various deadlines felt cumbersome.
To adapt, I integrated all my schedules into a unified system. This not only prevented conflicts but also provided a clear overview of my commitments. I set up reminders and allocated buffer times to accommodate unforeseen delays.
The hard skills I acquired during the program significantly enhanced my professional capabilities. Learning to create VPC networks, manage databases, and access VMs via SSH were skills directly applicable to my job. I started incorporating these tools into my work projects, improving efficiency and introducing new methodologies to my team.

Collaboration was another area of adaptation. Working on group projects with peers from diverse backgrounds required flexibility and open-mindedness. We had to navigate different working styles, time zones, and communication preferences. This experience honed my teamwork skills and taught me the value of leveraging collective strengths.

However, ILT 3 on Adaptability and Resilience provided invaluable insights. I learned that setbacks are not failures but part of the growth process. Resilience is about bouncing back and learning from difficulties. This perspective shift enabled me to approach challenges with a problem-solving mindset rather than feeling defeated.
I began practicing mindfulness and reflection, which helped me manage stress and maintain a positive outlook. Instead of fixating on what went wrong, I focused on actionable steps to catch up and improve. This approach not only helped me realign with the program's schedule but also enhanced my overall well-being.
Adapting my thinking extended to embracing uncertainty and being open to change. The dynamic nature of the tech industry means that adaptability is a crucial skill. By cultivating a flexible mindset, I became more comfortable with ambiguity and more adept at navigating complex problems.
