Adapting Irish sports to camp activities.
When filling out your Camp Canada application you will be asked to list up to 6 skills. These can be relevant to a variety of activities, from athletics to performing arts. Applying as an Irish participant can mean you possess skills in activities that aren’t common or known in Canada, and therefore are not offered at camp.
This would definitely apply to GAA sports such as Gaelic football, camogie and hurling. While these activities are not strictly offered, or are listed in the skills section, they can still be brought to camp and used successfully throughout the summer. While it is possible to list a sport, such as hurling, in the skills section under ‘Sport (other)’, it is also encouraged to think about other skills that you can list that might be more recognisable to camp directors. Examples of this can be:
While it is good to think about having these more familiar skills on your application (if you feel confident to run them), don’t forget to bring your Irish culture to camp. Most campers will have little to no knowledge on GAA sports and this is a great opportunity for a cultural exchange. As a fitness or soccer specialist, you might decide to run a quick game of Gaelic football for a session, why not?
Be sure to mention all you have to offer to camp directors, as you are in a unique position to provide these talents that not all applicants will have.?
