Every pharma company knows the risk delays can pose to the timely delivery of medicine, and that behind every successful delivery is a tale of collaboration, resilience, and adaptability. Recently, we worked with Marken to deliver vital medicine from Australia to Germany over the course of 18 days using Marken Monarch 1500X hybrid containers.?

Overcoming obstacles to ensure timely delivery??

When our partners at Marken had to transport active pharmaceutical products from Melbourne, Australia to Goslar, Germany, they needed a transportation solution to ensure that waiting patients received their medicine timely. Marken collected two Marken Monarch 1500X hybrid containers from Melbourne on the 25th of March and loaded them with the medicine products in Perth, Australia, on the 3rd of April. However, due to unforeseen scheduling adjustments, the previously confirmed flight would not arrive until the second week of April.??

When transporting vital medicines, delays like this can have devastating consequences, as a patient waits at the end of the line for every product shipped. Delays can also significantly increase the risk of temperature excursions. With pressure mounting to deliver the medicines on time, finding an alternative became a top priority.?

A new route was planned from Melbourne to Frankfurt, Germany, via Bangkok, Thailand. Freight backlogs over the Easter period meant that the containers were stored in a Marken secure facility in Melbourne at a controlled ambient temperature until the connecting flight was confirmed.?

Effective risk mitigation through accurate predictions?

Once the flights were confirmed, SkyCell and Marken collaborated closely to conduct a thorough risk assessment to anticipate potential challenges and provide essential data to ensure effective management of shipment conditions. With delays already impacting the delivery, maintaining temperature control and predicting challenges was critical.?

Thanks to SkyCell’s lane risk assessment tool we were able to predict the ambient temperatures that the containers would be exposed to. The analysis showed that the 1500X would be capable of handling external temperatures which would reach a sweltering temperature of over 35°C and drop to a cool 9°C along the course of the journey.?

A journey across continents?

The shipment left Melbourne and travelled via Bangkok to Frankfurt as planned. There it was stored within the required ambient temperature while awaiting customs clearance. After clearance, the container was delivered on the 10th of April having successfully protected the medicine inside, and without any temperature excursions.??

The final temperature readout shows the extraordinary accuracy of the lane risk assessment in predicting the ambient temperatures along the journey. For 18 days, the container was exposed to temperatures ranging from a high of over 36°C to a low of approximately 9°C. However, due to the resilience of our Marken Monarch 1500X self-charging hybrid containers, the internal temperature fluctuated only between +/- 1.5°C over the 368 hours of transport.??

Rising to meet the challenges of the pharma supply chain?

Along the journey from end to end, SkyCell provided Marken with detailed reports including daily temperature readouts and location tracking. This meant that if there were any hurdles or obstacles impacting the environmental conditions of the container, we could report this to our partner and take preventative actions if needed.??
