Adapt Or Die: Lessons From Zoom On How Changing Course Can Lead To Business Breakthroughs

Hello Dear Friend,

The interesting story in Mark chapter 2, especially verse 4 got me thinking about today's topic on pivoting. The scripture tells of four people who tried to get their sick friend to meet Jesus but could not get into the house where he was as a result of the crowd.

Instead of staying there or giving up, they looked for another option which was to try to drop their sick friend into the house from the rooftop, which they did and got Jesus to heal him.

This made me conclude that the ability to pivot - to fundamentally change the direction of a business when you realise that your product(s) or service(s) are not properly meeting the needs of the market, is a highly needed skill in the business terrain.

Entrepreneurs who rigidly cling to their ideas often find themselves left behind, while those who embrace flexibility and adapt to new circumstances thrive.

The importance of staying flexible cannot be overstated. Pivoting does not mean that you have failed or that you have given up on your dreams.

On the contrary, it shows you are smart enough to recognise that a particular strategy is not working and that you are brave enough to try something new.?

Pivoting allows businesses to stay relevant, meet changing customer needs, and take advantage of new opportunities as they arise.

One company we will take a look at today is Zoom - the video conferencing platform that became a household name during the COVID-19 pandemic.?

Zoom's success story is a clear example of how the boldness to pivot can lead to a business breakthrough.

The Zoom Case Study:

Zoom was not always the video conferencing giant we know today. The company's founder, Eric Yuan, originally worked at WebEx, another video conferencing company.?

After a while Yuan decided to leave the video conferencing company to start his own business. A move I see as his first life-changing pivot.

Initially, Yuan's new company (then called Saasbee) was focused on creating a better video conferencing experience for business customers, but as he and his team developed their product, they realised there was a broader market opportunity they could tap into.?

This led to another move I term the second pivot in Yuan’s life. They chose to expand their focus from just businesses to include individual consumers as well.

This pivot was crucial because by making their product user-friendly and accessible to everyone, Zoom positioned itself to capture a much larger market share such that by the time the pandemic hit and millions of people needed an easy way to connect virtually, Zoom was ready.

Zoom's success did not stop them from staying flexible. As usage exploded, the video conferencing platform quickly pivoted again to address security concerns, implementing new features like waiting rooms and passwords for meetings.?

They also expanded their offerings, adding services like Zoom Phone and Zoom Rooms to meet additional customer needs.

Here Are Some Advantages Of Pivoting:

1. Meeting Market Needs: Pivoting allows you to align your product or service more closely with what customers actually want, rather than what you think they want.

2. Staying Relevant: Markets change quickly. Pivoting will help you keep up with or even stay ahead of these changes.

3. Overcoming Obstacles: When you hit a roadblock with your current strategy, pivoting can help you find a way around it.

4. Expanding Opportunities: Like Zoom, you might discover that your product or service has applications you did not consider initially.

5. Learning and Growth: Each pivot is a learning experience that makes you and your team more adaptable and resilient.

Examples Of Other Companies That Successful Pivoted:

1. Slack: Originally started as a game company, Slack pivoted to focus on the internal communication tool they had developed for their team.

2. Instagram: Before becoming a photo-sharing app, Instagram started as a location-based check-in app called Burbn.

3. Netflix: The company started as a DVD-by-mail rental service before pivoting to streaming and then to creating original content.

How To Pivot Successfully:

1. Stay close to your customers: Understand their needs and how the needs are changing.

2. Be willing to let go: Do not get too attached to your original idea if it's not working.

3. Keep your core values: While your product or service might change, your fundamental mission should remain consistent.

4. Test and iterate: Make small changes and see how they work before making big pivots.

5. Communicate clearly: Keep your team and customers informed about changes.

Your ability to adapt could be the key to your success. The story of Zoom shows that success often comes from being flexible enough to see new opportunities and brave enough to seize them.

Pivoting is not about changing your core values or abandoning your vision. It is about finding new and better ways to achieve your goals.

As you build and grow your business, remember that your initial idea is just a starting point. Be open to change, stay attuned to your market, and don't be afraid to pivot when necessary.
