Adam had a BIG problem, and he couldn't find the solution anywhere
Meet Adam.
He is a 52-year-old finance director based in the city of London. He has a wife, three grown-up kids, and is a wonderful family man. He is described as being friendly and easy to get on with; perhaps this is part of what makes him so successful at what he does.
His ability to make connections and grow his business portfolio enabled him to retire at 48 (incredible, right?) He travelled the world with his wife for the best part of six months. Still, when he ran out of places to visit, he became a little bored and, in his own words, "began to drive the wife mad", so he went back to what he loved doing the most, being in the city and growing a business.
When he returned, his role changed slightly; the drive to earn more and more money had subsided, but instead, he began to consult and help people who were more junior to him. He loved it, he also enjoyed eating out three times a week, and he?loved wine! So you see, where everyone wanted to tap into his time and, ultimately, his knowledge; as a result, they took him to all of the best places around London. From rooftop bars in by the river to private members' clubs in Mayfair, he was enjoying this.
About a year ago, he was getting himself ready to head up to town like he usually did on a Tuesday morning. His wife had ironed his shirt for him and was wearing his favourite blue suit today. Suddenly he caught a glimpse of himself in the mirror; oh shit, what's that? He looked down to see he had grown a gut; it looked bloated and hung over his trousers; Where did that come from?
He attempted to button up his shirt and trousers, they fitted, but bloody hell, the buttons were so tight, when he sat down, they looked as if they might ping off and blind someone. He took a deep breath and put on his jacket; it was tight, really tight. He couldn't button up the front at all, and it felt like his arms had grown three inches as the back struggled to fit around his chest; SHIT. What happened?
He ignored it and headed out of the house and onto the train. The problem was that now he had noticed his belly and clothes not fitting; he was conscious of it. He was heading into town to meet a few old friends he hadn't seen for 18 months, and now he was paranoid. They were those friends that would spend the whole afternoon taking the mickey out of each other, banter as they called it.
What if they noticed his weight gain? Even worse, what if they mentioned it?
Five hours later, he was sitting on the train on the way home, feeling depressed. He replayed the scene in his head 100 times. The very first thing that his mates had said as he walked in was, "blimey, you shrunk that suit in the hot wash, Ad! They all rolled about in stitches (apart from Adam.) He had laughed it off, but it hurt; he had always been in relatively good shape. Still, at 52, he felt flabby, unfit, and unhealthy, and his doctor's words rang in his ears, "Adam, you must lose some weight, and we are putting you on blood pressure meds as it's too high. Join a gym, and we can review in six months." That was six months ago, and his subsequent appointment was on Friday; he dreaded it.
He had taken his doctor's advice and joined a local gym; he just hadn't used it at all. He was too busy, constantly taken out, and consistently low on energy. Add the feeling of lacking motivation and no clue where to start. He was stumped and very frustrated.
That was it; he booked himself in with a personal trainer at his local gym on Monday morning; he was getting this problem fixed. Adam was successful and successful people are driven, determined, and win. This would be no different.

He was excited and motivated to get this fixed.
His first session started with a weigh-in, and he was 102 kgs! He was a tall guy, so it made sense that he would be around 90kilos, that the last time he had weighed himself, maybe one year ago. Of course, he couldn't remember, but he was shocked. The session went well, and he spent most of his time chatting to the pt while he used the cross trainer; it was nice to start. He got a sweat on, and it felt good to work out.
The issues started to arise on week two. He was booked in for three sessions per week (it wasn't cheap, about £1000/ month, but he knew it was essential and an investment.) He was excited to get his weigh-in done the following Monday. After a week of training, he jumped on the scales with a hop and a skip, 102.5 kg; WTF? The personal trainer explained about water retention and something about carbs, but he was flat, really flat; the wind had left his sails. He did the session and went to work.
His PA had added a couple of meetings to his diary on Wednesday, and he needed to move his training session to another day; he called the pt. Adam couldn't believe it when he was told he couldn't offer flexibility on the session time. Furthermore, because it was less than 24 hours from his session, he would be charged the total amount of the session and lose it.
Adam turned up to his Friday session. He was keen to get some guidance on nutrition. Also, what he should eat today when meeting some business associates for what would be a boozy one. The personal trainer told him that he shouldn't drink and must eat more protein and veg. Adam explained that he was with people from the USA and they wanted to have a drink and see London. He also explained that he was going to a pizza restaurant; they didn't do veg and protein. The personal trainer was stumped, "Well, I would suggest changing venues and drinking water. " Adam was very underwhelmed.
He completed his month of sessions and never went back. He was feeling pissed off. He had wasted a grand, was the same weight and hadn't learnt how to lose weight and get healthier with his specific situation in mind. So now he felt like he had zero motivation!
How was he going to fix this problem? He had spoken to an expert, so what next?
