Have you ever played with Jenga blocks?
In this game, you are required to arrange one block on top of another. In the ad fraud ecosystem, something similar happens on a publisher’s website.?
What is visible to the human eye might be only a single ad. However, the topmost ad is stacked with multiple ads in the background. While only one ad is seen and engaged with, advertisers end up paying for multiple ad impressions draining their budgets beyond leaps and bounds without effective results.?
Detecting a fraud of this nature is a challenge for traditional black box solutions due to their reliability on general metrics like click rates, impression counts etc which can easily be skipped by ad stacking as the ads are still being engaged with, clicked and are creating impressions
Amid this scenario, understanding the nuances of this ad fraud and how a white-box transparent solution can be the knight in shining armour to avoid it becomes imperative.?
What is ad stacking?
Ad stacking is a deceptive ad fraud technique that takes advantage of multiple ad placements on a webpage. The process involves stacking several ads on each other, with only the top one visible to users. The remaining ads are hidden from view, meaning users can neither see nor click on them. This clever manipulation leads to falsely inflated ad impressions and, in some cases, even fabricated clicks, making it appear as if your ad is gaining more traction than it is.?
Now, if the ads are not visible, how do the advertisers pay? This happens because the top ad is loaded correctly and as a result, the ads behind are also loaded. When we say ads are loaded, what we mean is that one pixel of the ad is shown to the user for at least half a second. This leads to advertisers paying for impressions which are recorded despite the ads not being visible to the naked eye of the users.
