? Random acts of kindness don't exist, only random opportunities to give it
? If we leave things up to chance, chaos will reign.
? Only through intentionally planning opportunities to give kindness and intentionally looking for and acting on random opportunities to give kindness can we maximize kindness impact.
Over the years I have really come to appreciate The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation (RAKF). The work they do and the resources they provide to inspire kindness in this world are tremendous. In fact they are immeasurable.
I also enjoy watching a television show on BYUTV called Random Acts. Their a show where "everyday people are surprised with fun, fast, and sometimes furious acts of kindness."
The irony that I've come to realize over time, is that the kindness inspired by RAKF, the organization, and the kindness given on Random Acts, the TV show, is anything but random. In fact, I've come to realize, at least in my experience, that there are very few, if any, truly random acts of kindness. The only exception might be smiling. I know I've been in the situation, as I'm sure many, if not all, of you have, where someone smiles at you and without having to think about it, you return the smile. You can't seem to help yourself.
But that, is one of the rare exceptions.
You may be thinking, so what? What does it matter if acts of kindness are random or intentional, as long as kindness happens.
It matters because randomness implies leaving kindness giving to chance, hoping things will just happen without putting forth the effort to make things happen. It means discarding intentionality and relying on just winging it, counting on the fact that an opportunity to give kindness will be in our face enough to catch our attention when we aren't actively looking for it.
How many of you would leave the direction of your life or your business up to chance like that? The sad thing is, too many of us do that to some degree and then we wonder why we have relationship challenges and toxic work environments. But that's a topic for a different day.
The truth I've discovered, and I'm not sharing anything new really, is that when we intentionally plan to give kindness in situations where we have some control, and also intentionally look for random opportunities to give kindness that may present themselves throughout the day, a lot more kindness happens.
So is there a formula for both intentionally planning kindness giving, as well as intentionally looking for and acting on the random opportunities to give kindness that present themselves throughout the day?
Yes. It is simple. I've shared it before, and I'll share it again now.

11 个月Thank you for sharing your insightful thoughts on acts of kindness, and for inviting me to share my thoughts as well, @ Randall McNeely. And thank you also for being a strong advocate of kindness. Our world needs empathy, love, and kindness now more than ever. I think I agree with you that there aren't random acts of kindness; there are random opportinotutes for acts of kindness. Intentional kindness is important because everything good that man accomplishes begins with intention. If we make up our minds to do acts of kindness every day, we'll always find the right opportunity to be kind to others. And this can go a long way in helping to heal the world with kindness.
