Acts Chapter 2 verses 1-13 In The Amplified Bible "The Day of Pentecost"

Acts Chapter 2 verses 1-13, vividly recounts the remarkable event of Pentecost, a pivotal moment in the early Christian church. This passage describes the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the gathered disciples, accompanied by supernatural signs, including the ability to speak in foreign languages. Acts Chapter 2 verses 1-13 (AMP) "The Day of Pentecost"

Verses 1-4? "And when the day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all assembled together in one place, when suddenly there came a sound from heaven like the rushing of a violent tempest blast, and it filled the whole house in which they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues resembling fire, which were separated and distributed and which settled on each one of them. And they were all filled (diffused throughout their being) with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other (different, foreign) languages (tongues), as the Spirit kept giving them clear and loud expression [in each tongue in appropriate words]."

This passage describes the extraordinary event of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended upon the gathered believers in the form of tongues of fire, and they were filled with the Holy Spirit. They began to speak in languages they had not known before. The relevance to believers today is the affirmation of the Holy Spirit's power and presence in the church. It serves as a reminder of the supernatural empowerment given to believers through the Holy Spirit for the proclamation of the Gospel.

Verses 5-6 "Now there were then residing in Jerusalem Jews, devout and God-fearing men from every country under heaven. And when this sound was heard, a multitude of people gathered and they were astonished and bewildered, because each one heard those in the upper room speaking in his own [particular] dialect."

The miraculous nature of the event draws a diverse crowd of people from various regions who are astonished to hear the disciples speaking in their native languages. This emphasizes the universal nature of the Gospel and its message. Today, it reminds believers of the global reach of the Good News and the Holy Spirit's ability to communicate it to people of all languages and cultures.

Verses 7-8 "And they were beside themselves with amazement, saying, Are not all these who are talking Galileans? Then how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own (particular) dialect to which we were born?"

The amazement of the crowd continues as they question how Galilean disciples can speak in the diverse languages of those present. This highlights the supernatural character of the Holy Spirit's work. For believers today, it underscores that God can use ordinary individuals for extraordinary purposes when empowered by His Spirit.

Verses 9-11 "Parthians and Medes and Elamites and inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and [the province of] Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and the transient residents from Rome, both Jews and the proselytes [to Judaism from other religions], Cretans and Arabians too—we all hear them speaking in our own native tongues [and telling of] the mighty works of God!"

This section provides a list of the diverse regions represented among the amazed crowd, emphasizing the worldwide significance of the events at Pentecost. The relevance to believers today is the reminder that the Gospel is for all nations and peoples. The Holy Spirit's work transcends cultural and linguistic barriers, making it accessible to everyone.

Verses 12-13 "And they were beside themselves with amazement and were bewildered, saying, 'What can this mean?' But others made a joke of it and derisively said, 'They are simply drunk and full of sweet [intoxicating] wine.'"

While some are genuinely amazed, others mock the disciples, attributing their behavior to drunkenness. This demonstrates the diversity of responses to the work of the Holy Spirit. Believers today can expect a range of reactions when sharing the Gospel, from genuine interest to skepticism or mockery. It's a reminder to persevere in proclaiming the Gospel regardless of the responses.
