History
This track of land was called Woodland, Shingletown, and Fillmore after President Fillmore. There was a Fillmore PA. Finally the name Eckley was chosen in honor of Charles S. Coxe’s Son Eckley B. Coxe whom was a Mining Engineer. Established in 1854.
Main Street was put in by John Birkbeck of Freeland (Freehold) in the early 1800’s (19th Century). This village was named after The Entrepreneur’s whom started Eckley. They were John Leisenring, Francis Weiss, Asa Lansford Foster and Richard Sharpe. There were also two (2) Private Entrepreneur’s whom invested capital into the village. They did not stay in for very long. The Entrepreneurs put in Back Street or (South Street) and Shanty Streets. You wanted to live on Main Street.
