Activities to Do with Your Parent recognized at the Maude's Awards

The recipients of the 1st Annual Maude's Award for Innovation in Alzheimer's and Dementia Care were announced today and we are so pleased that “Activities to do with your Parent who has Alzheimer’s Dementia” was recognized in the Supporting Care Partners category. These awards were created to enrich the quality of life for persons living with Alzheimer's Disease and related dementias and their care partners. Monetary awards were provided to organizations and individuals for innovations excelling in one of three categories: 

*Making Connections - Connecting people with dementia to the world and people around them;

*Cultivating Health - Providing exceptional care or education that supports the long-term physical health of persons living with dementia; 

*Supporting Care Partners – Providing education, training or support for care partners of persons living with dementia.

Judith A. Levy, Ed.M., O.T.R. is an occupational therapist with over 40 years experience She received her award in the category of 'Supporting Care Partner' for her book “Activities to Do with Your Parent Who Has Alzheimer's Dementia.” This book provides care partners/family members more than 50 activities along with suggested ways to adapt them. Each activity is followed by an Assessment Form which is allows for communication and consistency between carers. This benefits the individual as well as their carer and helps to determine the set-up and environment that is most effective. Also provided are room by room safety suggestions, a home and personal safety assessment, definitions of frequently used medical terms, burnout prevention ideas and Alzheimer's support sources.

Mrs. Levy has used her book as a training tool for family support groups and at caregiver inservice trainings. She has done webinars, radio interviews as well as magazine articles on activity as it relates to those with dementia. She can be reached at [email protected]
