Picnic Against Apartheid - Cork

No alt text provided for this image

We are bringing a Picnic Against Apartheid to Cork to call on the Irish Government, and others, to recognise what is happening as Apartheid under international law.

Why a picnic? We want to act in solidarity with Palestinians who are forced out of public spaces by Israeli authorities – just because of who they are – often for something as simple as having a picnic. This is just one example of how Israel enforces a system of oppression and domination against the Palestinian people, and it must end now.

Join this free event and learn about what is happening in Palestine.?Tadhg Hickey, ?comedian and activist will be speaking, and there will be Palestinian snacks available.

This event is organised by Amnesty International Ireland with the?Irish Anti-Apartheid Campaign for Palestine ?and in Collaboration with?Aclaí Gym .

Event information

Date: Sunday 2 July

Location: Unit 9, Crawford Business Park, Bishop St, The Lough, Cork, T12 PR89

Time: 2pm - 5pm

You can also register your interest to?attend or host other Picnic Against Apartheid ?events this summer in public parks and green areas across the country as a visible demonstration of solidarity.

Call on President Biden to free Leonard Peltier now!?

Forty-six years ago, Leonard was convicted for the killing of two FBI agents on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.?Decade after decade, he has always maintained his innocence.

He has been imprisoned in the USA for over 46 years, including years in solitary confinement, after an unfair trial.

Leonard is now 78 years old and suffering from several serious health conditions, so President Biden must grant him clemency and release him.

Urgent Action Iran: Grave Risk of Execution in Connection to Protests

No alt text provided for this image

At least seven individuals in Iran are under sentence of death in connection with nationwide protests, with dozens of others also at risk.

Since late April 2023, the Iranian authorities have embarked on an alarming execution spree of scores of people, intensifying their use the death penalty as a tool of repression in an attempt to instill fear into the population and crush ongoing acts of resistance against the authorities and establishment.

If you have some time, write your?letter ?to the Iranian authorities!

Sign our Pledge to call for an end to Israel's Apartheid

No alt text provided for this image

For over 75 years, Israel has created and maintained laws, policies, and practices that deliberately oppress Palestinians.

We are campaigning to persuade the Irish government to officially recognise Israel’s system of apartheid, and to take meaningful action internationally, at the bilateral and multilateral level, to demand an end to it so that Palestinian women, children and men can live their lives in freedom without fear of persecution or violence.

If you want to help end apartheid, sign our pledge!

Picnics Against Apartheid 2023

No alt text provided for this image

We had a fantastic turnout for this year's launch of Picnics Against Apartheid outside Leinster House on 10 May.

Together we occupied space to show solidarity with Palestinians and, with our colleagues from the Anti-Apartheid Campaign for Palestine, to call for the recognition of Israel's commitment of the crime of apartheid.?

Many thanks to our wonderful volunteers who supported us with today's this event!

Alongside Coalition partners, we also marked 75 years since the Nakba by lighting up Liberty Hall in the colours of the Palestinian flag.

Campaign Updates

Unite for Pride - Protect the Right to Protest in Türkiye

No alt text provided for this image

The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has been in power in?Türkiye?for the last two decades. Since the?country-wide Gezi Park protests in 2013, the government view and treat any?expression of collective dissent, however peaceful, as a direct threat to their rule.?

The authorities have used temporary and/or blanket bans to?prevent the exercise of the right to peaceful protest by women’s rights activists, healthcare workers, lawyers and political opposition parties.?Police, including riot police, are?routinely deployed to carry out crowd control and unlawfully disperse peaceful protests, kettle protesters and even?order dispersal but then prevent participants from leaving in order to detain them.

As part of these attacks, the LGBTI activists and supporters are one of the most targeted groups. Since 2015, the?government has executed an extensive campaign to break up LGBT rights public events, including Pride marches?and, in Ankara, all LGBT events and public LGBT-related discussions from 2017 to 2019. Not only have Pride?bans intensified but in?numerous instances, the authorities have pursued legal action against activists and organizations for supporting?LGBTI rights and detained journalists reporting on Pride events.

International solidarity and?support are vital to empower LGBTI activists and their allies who face this intimidation and unlawful restrictions.?Make sure to march with us 24 June to show solidarity with LGBTI activists!

Activist Spotlight

Meet Federico, coordinator of our Dublin Central Local Group and community activist! Here's a snippet of what inspired Federico to get involved with Amnesty as an activist:

"Taking time to dedicate to the local community has always been a priority for me and a constant in my life. Joining Amnesty – the most important NGO protecting human rights – was, therefore, an almost automatic and immediate choice.

As the Dublin activist group’s coordinator, I am working to strengthen the support for migrant communities, particularly war refugees, in building a new life in Ireland."
