An Active And Complete Mailing List Creates The Need To Go To The Bank!

I’m currently working with a long-term client who is selling their business. This client has an active e-mail list I communicate with between one and three times per month. We have a duplicate and somewhat smaller snail mail list we communicate with quarterly. We are active in other forms of communication every month including social media and blogging but I want to confine my comments to these two the snail mail and e-mail lists. The takeaway is demonstrating the immense value of having and using these lists as they pertain to and influence the sale.

Between the two lists we communicate with the clients who give him money for his service about 28 times per year. He admits he doesn’t do a great job of tracking sales from these communications but he hears from his customers that they are reading what we are sending. (He calls them customers and I’d lean toward clients) The buyer of his business is working with a broker. The broker explained to my client the value of having an active list in dollars and cents. When I started working with this business they had never considered the value of a list.

New customers are expensive to get in the door and require a lot of work to get them to buy. New customers don’t know you and lack a reason to trust you. Existing customers know and trust you. You already know what you can sell them so when you suggest something else the likelihood of them responding increases. With an existing customer you also have an easier ability to increase the amount of the sale and the frequency of purchase.

My client was thrilled to learn, in dollars and cents, what the actual cash value of a complete and active client list is worth now that they are selling. This is an additional return on investment they will have for the rest of their lives. Have you invested the time to create a list and then develop content your customer/client will respond to?
