Actions can speak much louder than words on #LinkedIn

You may have seen this beautiful video (and it's worth seeing again and again), but JIC you missed it, you will see true human compassion when a boys' soccer team from Spain defeated another team from Japan. The short video is here.

Actions and/or words: sportsmanship, empathy, and consolation. The Spanish boys' faces and gestures are so powerful, even when there is seemingly no common language.?

My LinkedIn tie-in for this video? Act well as a professional; be upright in doing so:

  • Give of yourself: openly offer others "atta-boys" and "atta-girls" when the recipients succeed and even when they do not. Go beyond a simple click of "like;" add a personal comment or two to congratulate.
  • Be supportive of your entourage of connections and help when you can by curating articles and sharing thoughts you come across, knowing that effort is small but can be beneficial to others.
  • Offer an introduction of one of your colleagues to a connection (LinkedIn makes this easy) as a gesture of faith and friendship; this can be so meaningful and empowering to the recipient, and to your colleague. Double whammy.
  • Endorse someone for a skill they demonstrate well. One click.

Any and all are simple actions. A click or two; a moment of your time.

Yes, actions are powerful. Words are too. Try to combine them both in the right situations:

  • Offer an unsolicited recommendation to others who have gone above and beyond. They will forever remember this.
  • Rewrite an older recommendation you gave a while ago with refreshed and more demonstrative anecdotes to show how well the connection has performed recently.
  • Think outside the box and write a LinkedIn Post about a situation in which you cooperated with another professional (and name that person in the body of the Post using the @and then their name). That way the update heralding the Post appears on their profile and all their connections' home pages. These names also appear in the worldwide Post distribution on LinkedIn. Build followers this way.

Language is verbal and gestural. Think of what a simple gesture can do. Be economical and meaningful, like that Spanish kid who hugs and pats each Japanese kid on the cheek and powerfully conveys "you did great-it's all right," with the right amount and quality of words, or no words at all.

Bravo.

Marc W. Halpert, a beautiful article and one that illustrates not just what makes us good professionals, but good human beings. Our acts of compassion, generosity and praise mean so much to the recipients. In fact, we can't measure or know the depth of impact that they make. We have no idea what people hold in their heart and how much good we do when we act in this way.
