Actionate: A New Verb for a New Era

Actionate: A New Verb for a New Era

At what point does our intellectual imperative to predict an outcome intersect with our moral imperative to act upon it??

Imagine this: Your AI system sends an alert - a train wreck is imminent. What are you going to do about it?

You may have the capability to anticipate the impending wreck. But do you know what action(s) to take to prevent the disaster???

Knowing Vs. Doing

Prediction, with its AI-driven superpowers, basks in the limelight and draws hefty investment; intervention, on the other hand, often gets short shrift. Predicting and intervening are two different competencies. This imbalance turns the superpower of prediction into a hollow spectacle, creating a world rich in foresight but poor in action.?

In healthcare, AI exhibits an impressive capacity to foresee events like heart failure readmissions or SEPSIS, providing healthcare providers with a theoretically potent tool for reducing hospitalization costs and saving lives. However, despite the best intentions, these predictions often fail to yield tangible outcomes. The challenge lies in the healthcare system's inability to convert these predictive insights into actions, given the constraints of staffing, conflicting priorities, logistical distractions, and other real-world barriers.

Our inability to act could lead to two dangerous outcomes. First, we could lose trust in the predictive powers of AI and machine learning, viewing them as mere alarmists without any real-world impact. Or, even worse, our inability to act can make us indifferent. In both cases, we become trapped in a cycle of inaction, destined to witness the same train wreck happen over and over again.

We must close the gap between prediction and intervention. The time has come to integrate passive projection into proactive prevention.

Actionate - A New Verb

To truly harness the power of prediction, we must 'actionate'. "Actionate," an offshoot of "action," transforms plans into actions and insights into tangible results. The ability to actionate transforms AI/ML and LLM capabilities from potential into actual value, converting theoretical possibility into tangible results.?

Why define Actionate?

Language is a powerful tool. It not only communicates thoughts and ideas, but it also shapes our understanding and perception of the world around us. Naming and defining a concept like "actionate" allows us to talk about and recognize the crucial role of action in turning predictions and plans into reality.

Moreover, introducing a new term like "actionate" into the lexicon can catalyze change. It can encourage people to think more critically about their actions in response to predictions and insights and strive for better, more effective ways of turning these insights into concrete results.

By defining "actionate," we give weight to converting insight into action. It's a Call-to-Action — a prompt for us to prioritize actions, not just predictions.

We are pioneering this shift in paradigm - from prediction to action, from potential catastrophe to averted crisis, and from being spectators to becoming preventers.?

AI to Orchestrated Action is the future – and it's a future we should all look toward.
