An Actionable Thought Experiment

An Actionable Thought Experiment

Way back in January of the year 2024 I wrote about how Referrals Make the World Go Around, the piece itself has a reasonable amount of views, reads and impressions. I am still unsure of these so called LinkedIn analytics, so the next phase of this experiment will then be more deliberately actionable: Capable of being acted on. ?

But first some stats: According to the data, I have 4276 followers, enough to start a cult I suppose, if perhaps I had that much charisma or interest. For the Newsletter itself, I have 589 subscribers, with which according to a business model I once heard professed on how to be a successful band, is if you have 1000 fans and you can convince those 1000 fans to give you $100 a year you could make a living.? For the math challenged that is $100,000.00,? Weird right? And yet so simple, but where was I, oh, if I could just get my 589 subscribers to offer me $200.00 a year each, I could make an additional, $117,200.00 per year! So what do you say 598 followers are you in?? OK let’s look at that further, say I said I could make a feature film for, oh I don’t know, say $589,000, then all I’d need is for my 589 loyal subscribers to send me $1000 each.? He breaks out his calculator to be sure… yep that’s about right. Now what if there was an immediate 30% return? So for every $1000 you get $300 back, in due time, and by immediate I mean like 18-24 months.? And what if in the end you were part owner/investor of said film and what if that film did fairly well, let’s say it made conservatively $1,589.000. That is a $1M profit.? So what do you say folks are you in? ?

Hello?

Anyone?

I’ll make you a lovely tea… or French Toast?

Anyway, this was not the way I planned on writing this latest newsletter, which is why I probably enjoy writing these. They inspire random thoughts that are probably bubbling in the recesses of my mind.? What I set out to do, honestly was a 'Thought Experiment’. What is a thought experiment you say?? Well, A?thought experiment?is a?hypothetical?situation in which a?hypothesis,?theory or?principle?is laid out for the purpose of thinking through its consequences or results. The concept is also referred to as a?Gedankenexperiment.

OK Jimmy, what is this great ‘Thought Experiment’ you are planning? And why should us 589 give a flying fulmar (you can look that one up).? Well actually this is an 'ACTIONABLE Thought Experiment' and you’re right you shouldn’t give a flying fulmer, actually I don’t know if they can fly?… If you do believe that indeed, 'Referrals DO Make the World Go Around' like I do and since I am a Spielberg film fan, I come from a place of belief and make believe and gosh, I hope most of the 589 do too. ?

START HERE - As I have stated more recently, I follow and often question, but also heed the advice of a handful of online guru’s and thought provokers. With that I have seen a common thread that even I profess regarding referrals and the dreaded ‘networking’.? Why did he say dreaded?? Maybe because for many it seems like ‘networking’ sounds so darn businessy and so umm... corporate, yeah, that’s it, it sounds too corporate, not genuine or organic.?

I agree and you aren’t so wrong thinking such abstract thought. But and however, if you haven’t taken note, these are the Musings of an Entrepreneur, not the musings of a friend circle. Funny the idea of a friend circle has more of an ick factor to me than networking.? Anyway FFS, where I am going??

One of the more prolific online guru’s I follow has posted 7 tips on building your network, I have read through it and whilst doing so, I find my cynical side swatting at the suggestions as if they were mosquitos in July... in Alaska.? "Nonsense" I say, “not what I have experienced!”, from the back row someone calls out "BS".?

NO! WAIT, STOP the noise, WTF already! These newsletters are to be positive uplifting and inspirational, you sound like a gaggle of curmudgeons! ?

Hey Jimmy! Spin the positive already, shouts a voice from the 29th row. Hmm, that is curious that happens to be the number of Newsletters I have released. See how I did that?? Gosh I hope to have one subscriber left after this randomness. ?

And now, here is where I get to my Actionable Thought Experiment: (insert drumroll)

I am instructed to assemble a list of 5 connectors, just 5.? Inspired to engage with some dormant contacts, make it sincere and not a direct ask, but make sure you have an ask. Know what you want, apparently that will guide folks to be proactive. Offer value in return:

Hey you 589 subscribers, how can I help YOU!??

Additional tips I would include, network with people you like, seek out the kinds of people you want to know, meet in person, take advice and recommendations.?

So there it is, or here it is:

I am gainfully seeking connectors, apparently 5 folks willing to go the extra mile and refer me.?(You might want to contact me, for specifics)

For what you ask?: Let’s get a film made! Refer me to agents, managers, producers, actors, investors.? Do it, refer me, I dare you…

Too harsh?? OK prove my Actionable Thought Experiment and quiet down that guy in the 29th row. ?

If filmmaking isn’t your jam, then let’s try the investor entrepreneurial route of getting that new camera head made: We need investors! (inquire within)?

I am open to referrals, just PM me and let’s see how this goes.

Jimmy

(Note: even though Jimmy stated earlier this week he has been sick, we assure you he is stable, off his meds and getting plenty of rest.? ;-)? ? )

Loved your writing style that wanders so. And I'm totally serious. Most newsletters are dry and boring. But I felt like I was watching an entertaining monologue when reading yours. I'm curious about your movie now.
