Actionable feedback - approaching the whole class!
A recent change I've introduced in my A-level Biology class, revolutionizing the feedback process into a collaborative and empowering experience for my students!
In the spirit of creating a dynamic learning environment, I've moved away from the traditional method of handing over marked papers with a dry mark scheme. Instead, I engage my students in a whole-class feedback session, and the results have been phenomenal ?? & I am hoping to make it even better in coming days!
I begin by annotating the markscheme as I assess, noting common mistakes and insightful responses. This method not only streamlines the feedback process but also helps me tailor my teaching to address specific challenges the class faces.??
During the feedback session, I strategically select questions to review based on the collective difficulty rather than following the paper sequentially. This ensures that we tackle the most challenging areas first, keeping the session engaging and focused.
One noteworthy change is my decision to prioritize #resilient and high-achieving students at the start of the session. This deliberate choice sets a positive tone and demystifies the learning process by showcasing that even top-performing students make mistakes. It fosters a supportive atmosphere where mistakes are embraced as opportunities to learn and improve!
To model effective #communication and #reflection, I kick off the session with a student who embodies resilience and isn't afraid to seek clarification. By verbalizing their thought processes and openly discussing mistakes, this student sets an example for their peers, encouraging a culture where it's okay to fail and learn from it.
This shift from a teacher-centered to a student-centric #feedback approach not only cultivates a sense of #responsibility in my students but also sparks engaging discussions that deepen their understanding of the subject.
