Action

Planning is good but action is better. There is nothing like action. After all, if you think too much about your next step you will spend your life standing on one foot. Action becomes the only difference between your goals and your dreams. Think about that for a second …but maybe not for too long. You need time for … yes, you got it: Action.

You will soon find out that most people plan …and plan and plan again...but get little done. (Actually, I once worked for a company that had pre-pre planning meetings). It could also be that plans have little connection, milestones or measurable goals in line with the reality they are living, they just forget to start or they dream, procrastinate and therefore don’t get on with it. Use the 80:20 rules and make sure you spend most of your time on acting. And make sure you stay in tune with reality so you can seize the opportunities.

When I returned to my hometown ten years after graduating and met old friends from my high school years, I realized there were two kinds of people at the reunion. One kind that said, “Wow, I also thought about doing what you have done but I never did it.”…and then the ones that said. “I decided to start to work in the town steel foundry, got married, had kids and I am so happy with my choice.” It was these later friends I identified with, the ones living with less regrets, more content with their life and seemingly in charge of their own destiny.

Success depends on the courage to act, and courage in turn, requires a level of faith that every opportunity acted upon will lead to more and better ways to live, serve, learn, grow and prosper. Maybe its more about “being” than “doing” …or?
