Action Alert: Rally and Phonebank for Lower Speed Limits This Week
Transportation Alternatives
Transportation Alternatives is your advocate for bicycling, walking and public transit in New York City.
We are outraged and saddened to report that Sammy’s Law — the bill named after Families for Safe Streets co-founder Amy Cohen’s son that would allow New York City to set lower, safer speed limits — was not included in the final state budget.?
The fight continues on, and we need your help to pass this lifesaving bill.?
There is a month left in Albany’s legislative session, and we are fighting to ensure this lifesaving bill becomes law.?
Right now, we need the City Council to make an official request to the New York State Legislature for Sammy’s Law, known as a “home rule message.” We also need the Assembly to move the bill.?
Time is running out and we need your help to make lower speed limits a reality. Here are two ways to help ensure Sammy’s Law is passed:?
Tuesday, May 9 | Noon – 2 p.m. | Virtual Phone Banking?
We are hosting a virtual phone bank tomorrow, Tuesday, from noon to 2 p.m., to call elected officials about the importance of passing Sammy’s Law this year.?

Please join even if you can only join for a short time! RSVP to get the Zoom link. Our phone banks in April got a big response from elected officials in Albany, and we need to keep up the pressure.?
Thursday, May 11 | 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. | In-Person Rally and Lobby Day?
Join us at 9:30 a.m., Thursday, May 11, at City Hall Park for a rally and press conference to demand that the City and State get Sammy's Law passed this session.?
Immediately after the press event, we will be meeting with City Council members at 250 Broadway (across from City Hall). Following the meetings, we will head back outside to catch City Council members as they head into the 1:30 p.m. City Council meeting.?
Please RSVP if you are able to join for any portion of the events on Thursday.?
Thank you all so much for your tireless advocacy. Every way you contribute, large or small, makes a difference.?
