Act!: Cloud vs. Desktop

It's hard to overstate the impact of cloud computing. With it, services like Netflix and Uber have been able to scale globally, and thousands of new market entrants and business models have been born.

Before the cloud, the predominant model was to install software on a local hard drive, where the user was responsible for backups, service, and network connectivity. Much software still runs that way. In fact, my company still supports tens of thousands of these "desktop installs".

For many businesses, where internet connectivity is less than reliable, or for those who have data security concerns, this local model is preferred, despite the many advantages of cloud-deployed applications.

Sometimes people don't adopt the "newest thing" because it's working fine where it is. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" is a perfectly sensible posture. That said, the growing - almost default - use of cloud computing does spark interest in long-time desktop users, and they often ask us why they should consider switching platforms.

Act! recently hosted a webinar to address that very question, and I wanted to share some insights here, especially after connecting with some of our customers recently.

What is "The Cloud"?

The "cloud" sounds abstract but it’s not that different from how we have traditionally managed data. It really is an elevation of the client/server model that IT organizations have used for decades. Instead of your desktop computer, cloud data is stored on a secure, remote CPU network. One obvious advantage is that your data is accessible (by authorized users) from any web-enabled device anywhere, anytime.

The cloud has become the best choice for any business seeking flexibility, enhanced collaboration, and real-time access. Here are a few other reasons why moving to the cloud might be right for your business:

?? Real-Time Access & Collaboration On The Go

With a cloud deployment, you can access your data from anywhere in the world, on any web device. This is ideal for businesses with remote teams or field service organizations. No need to take notes and input them later, or worry about information being out of sync.

?? Enhanced Security & Automatic Updates

Cloud technology includes strong security features like encrypted storage and automatic backups, keeping your business data safer than relying on a single hard drive with occasional backups. Plus, with automatic software updates, you’ll always have the latest features, fixes, and improvements.

?? Cost Savings

By utilizing cloud services, organizations can reduce capital expenses associated with infrastructure maintenance, upgrades, and operational costs, leading to potential cost savings. Smaller companies benefit from IT expertise without having to hire it.

?? Dynamic Scalability

Cloud platforms provide the flexibility to scale resources up or down based on demand, allowing businesses to optimize their use of resources and adapt to changing needs easily. Building internal infrastructure for peak load times means that capacity sits idle during lower usage periods.

Ultimately, both our desktop and cloud versions are built to support small business success. It’s all about finding the solution that fits your current and future needs.
