ACSA and Ekurhuleni sign MoU to facilitate Aerotropolis advancement at ORTIA

Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the City of Ekurhuleni aimed at facilitating the implementation of the Aerotropolis development at OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA).

The Aerotropolis development refers to the coordinated and integrated delivery of on- and off-airport initiatives and projects to drive sustainable socio-economic development and an economic infrastructure development programme.

The MoU was concluded based on both parties’ agreement that it is critical to formulate a structured partnership that focuses on the objectives of the collaboration and cooperation between them that will ensure mutual benefits.

The main objectives of the MoU are to advance the collaboration between the parties and to specifically coordinate various projects and programmes located at and within the vicinity of ORTIA, and to advance the Aerotropolis development outlined in the Aerotropolis Master Plan, as the driver of development within the City of Ekurhuleni and the ORTIA precinct.

As part of the agreement, ACSA undertakes to advance the implementation of the Aerotropolis-related development; provide logistical and operational support for projects located within the ORTIA Precinct; conceptualise projects that seek to advance the interests of both the City of Ekurhuleni and ACSA; and to contribute meaningfully to job creation and the local economy.

For its part, the City of Ekurhuleni undertakes to provide logistical and operational support for projects located within the ORTIA Precinct; support ACSA with infrastructure projects, through bulk services provision and development approvals; and support ACSA in maintaining compatible land use planning at and in proximity to the airport, by collaborating on the development of spatial plans.

Furthermore, the City also commits to advance the implementation of the Aerotropolis development; conceptualise projects that seek to advance the interests of both the City and ACSA; and contribute meaningfully to job creation and the local economy.

The anticipated benefits of the MoU include the strengthening of the relationship between the ACSA and the City, fostering collaboration and partnership opportunities between the parties and providing support for the advancement of the Aerotropolis development.

Additionally, it is expected that the partnership will result in increased business, trade and revenue within the City of Ekurhuleni and the ORTIA precinct and facilitate faster rollout times for large-scale infrastructure projects that require approval from the City.
