#ACoffeeWith Andrew Hopwood at Champion Accountants

1. Tell us what you do at Champion in 10 words or less.

A director in Chester looking after the team and clients.

2. What’s your most memorable career moment?

After more than 26 years, it’s hard to pick one thing. Over the years, the main thing I’ve taken great pleasure from is seeing so many trainees come in, develop, and then either progress within Champion or move on to make their mark in industry as Financial Controllers, Financial Directors etc. Throughout my time here, I hope I’ve played a (small) part in their journey.

3. What’s your business motto?

Work hard, play hard, and always take pride in your work.

4. Who is your role model, and why?

No one role model as such – I think you take bits from lots of people in your life. My grandad had his own business and I always remember him telling me the best advice he got when he started out was to make sure he had a good accountant. Maybe that influenced me!

5. At what time of the day are you most inspired?

I like the theory of being a morning person, but I don’t think I ever will be! I always did my studying for exams late into the evening and even now I seem to be more alive later in the day.

6. Tea or coffee – what’s your go-to hot beverage at work?

Definitely tea – as my colleagues will know, I rarely turn one down! However, in the last year or so, I have finally gotten into coffee (well, lattes and cappuccinos) after 40-odd years of not drinking it.

7. What piece of advice would you give your younger self?

I’d say try not to worry so much. I still do a little but I’m much better than I was. Also, try to think, “what’s the worst that can happen?”.

8. How do you unwind after a busy day at Champion?

A few beers, a glass of wine, a game of golf, or watching Liverpool or Wrexham play football. Although, in reality, most of my spare time is spent taking my daughters to their various activities.

9. If you jetted off on holiday tomorrow, where are you heading?

From the places I’ve been, Italy is a favourite. You can’t beat the food, wine, and scenery. In the long term, though, I’ve always wanted to go to Japan.

10. You’re going into I’m a Celebrity and can only take one luxury item. What item are you choosing?

Probably a duvet, even though it might be too hot. I like my sleep, and I struggle to do so without being curled up in a duvet, so I’d have to go for that.
