Achieving Thought Leadership: Lessons from a Decade of Building Professional Credibility

Achieving Thought Leadership: Lessons from a Decade of Building Professional Credibility

Ten years ago, I embarked on a journey to build my professional credibility through thought leadership. This article is a reflection on my experiences and the invaluable lessons I've learned along the way. That what worked for me may not be a one-size-fits-all solution, but I hope my insights will inspire your own path to success.

The Power of Thought Leadership

Thought leadership, for me, was about establishing both physical and digital followership, positioning myself (and later, my colleagues) as experts and visionaries in our niche. When I took the reins as CEO in Master Danmark, we were exceptionally skilled but largely unknown in the market.

A Crossroads and Transformation

Amid fierce competition and a stagnant market, we found ourselves at a crossroads. The options were clear: grow, sell, or cease to exist. We transitioned from an obscure player to a growth-oriented company with the largest market share.

Innovation for Growth

I was convinced that our growth had to be fueled by innovation. The evolving landscape demanded adaptation. My belief lay in propelling growth through visibility, new skills, and an innovative business model. We had to lead the way in shifting paradigms to create value for our customers.

Embracing the Digital Realm

As a relatively unknown leader in the beginning, establishing recognition was a significant challenge. I had extensive experience as a public speaker and was proficient in physical communication. However, I decided to channel my energy into the digital and written spheres, where I could grow the most. My following primarily blossomed in the digital world, allowing others to learn about my expertise without in-person interactions, a unique challenge.

Here are some examples from Google featuring me as an expert.

Areas of Expertise

I gained recognition as an expert in insights on leadership, team development, business growth, technology, and digital transformation. These platforms were instrumental in establishing my thought leadership and professional credibility.

Channels of Thought Leadership

I maintained a consistent presence as an expert across various channels, including conferences, media, webinars, newspapers, TV, social media, websites, and podcasts. Additionally, I extended my influence through board memberships, advisory boards, and external lecturer positions at various universities.

Ten Essential Steps to Becoming an Expert in Your Field

Becoming an expert in your field is a journey that requires dedication, strategy, and a deep understanding of your audience.

In this article, I will share the ten crucial steps that have been instrumental in my own path towards expertise. Whether you're starting from scratch or seeking to enhance your existing knowledge, these steps can guide you on your journey to becoming a recognized authority.

1. Share Insights Freely

One of the initial steps on the road to expertise is to share your knowledge, tips, and advice without charge. As an unknown in your field, it's essential to provide value to your audience before considering monetization.

2. Define Your Target Audience

Be clear about your target audience. In my case, I focused on guiding leaders, executives, board members and HR professionals. Your content should revolve around helping this specific audience succeed, providing them with valuable insights for both the short and long term.

3. Connect the Dots

Expertise involves understanding how various components within your domain are interconnected. Describe these connections and how emerging trends impact existing structures. Offer your insights on what to expect in terms of new requirements or opportunities in your field.

4. Reveal Your Motives and Passions

Transparency is key. Share your motives and what drives you when communicating about a particular subject. Embrace continuous renewal and curiosity, especially when faced with topics that challenge your understanding. Keep your knowledge fresh and relevant to stay ahead in your field.

5. Understand Your Customers

When you communicate, demonstrate your deep understanding of your target audience. Show that you grasp their situation, opportunities, dilemmas, and provide advice that they can genuinely benefit from.

6. Show it, Don't Tell it

Rather than merely stating your expertise, demonstrate it. Let others endorse you, and serve as a positive role model. Participate as a keynote speaker or abstain altogether if the topic doesn't align with your expertise.

7. Decline If Expertise Is Lacking

Avoid the common trap of speaking on topics where you lack expertise. Journalists may seek quick quotes, even on subjects outside your specialty. Maintain your integrity and protect the integrity of your field by referring them to more qualified experts.

8. Avoid Creating Noise

Don't contribute to the noise by publishing content for the sake of it. Instead, wait until you have valuable insights to share. Your expertise should rise above the surplus of irrelevant content.

9. People Follow People

Understand the mechanics of social media. There's ample knowledge on how to build a digital following as an expert. You don't have to figure it out on your own. For instance, you can follow the "know, like, trust, buy" model, recognizing that each step is essential. First, make yourself known; then, get people to like what you share, build trust, and, finally, offer something they're willing to buy.

10. Humanize Your Approach

Be yourself. Write in your own voice and share your personal insights and doubts. Discover your unique position as an expert and a human being. Embrace curiosity, especially in areas that challenge your understanding.

Lessons I Wish I Had Known

I also want to share some lessons I wish I had known in advance:

  • Thought leadership isn't for everyone; it requires courage, knowledge, and a structured approach.
  • Underestimating the commitment required is a common pitfall. It's a long-term endeavor.
  • Visual content like images and videos can be remarkably effective in thought leadership.

Thought leadership is a journey of continuous growth, adaptation, and perseverance. While my experiences and lessons may not apply universally, I hope they serve as inspiration and guidance for your own path toward building professional credibility and thought leadership.

Good and inspiring thoughts Julie ?? Thought leadership is a tricky thing. I fully agree that it’s critical to be conscious about your target audience and market, to find the right level of depth and local vs. global perspective.
