How are those hopes and dreams going for you?
Let’s agree that you’re clear about your goals, have them in your sights and have a plan in action to accomplish them. Nice going!
As we’re all works in progress, let’s continue to agree that your growth mindset has guided you through enough “inner work” to clarify your sense of purpose – your “why.” Hopefully, you’ve gained greater insight from our most recent “Self-Identity Series.”
You’ll find these articles highly relevant to making this one more actionable. You now possess the growth habits needed to make your aspirations inevitable or, at the very least, more probable.
Spring-boarding from our last issue about Becoming Your Future Self , the principles of Inevitability involve advancing from visualizing to actualizing your broader goals.
When we consider an Inevitability, it applies to specific events or significant personal goals that we fully believe in and are committed to make happen. They are our inevitabilities. Of course, this must be within reason and conceptually possible.
By definition, your Inevitability is something you believe is so certain to occur that it’s as if it has already happened, just in the future. This represents the most closed-loop way of interpreting an inevitable eventuality, which is precisely the point.
One interesting discovery about the word “inevitable” is that it’s a common thread in the definitions of fate, destiny and Karma.
Here’s the conventional verbiage from Webster’s:
Inevitability
(Noun) in?ev?i?ta?bil?ity
[in-ev-i-tuh-buh-l-eh-tee]
That which is unable to be avoided, evaded, or escaped; certain; necessary; sure to occur, happen, or come; unalterable.
For our purposes, the main power source for defining and achieving an emanates within us as individuals.
More specifically, Inevitability is about fulfilling one’s purpose. It’s not just about defining your why but also gaining a crystal-clear vision of achieving it.
It becomes an Inevitability when clarity combines with human energy – powered by willfulness, tenacity, grit and passion at the heart of which is an unwavering self-belief .
Grit is well-established as the most potent ingredient for ultimate success. Do you agree?
Actualizing an Inevitability may involve great personal sacrifice, such as financial hardship. The expression “do or die trying” comes to mind.
Think of Inevitability as compulsory. There’s nothing quite like necessity to make something happen. Consider yourself unstoppable!
This goes beyond amplifying gratitude by visualizing already having something in the present. This has less to do with imagination as it does your undeterrable self-belief in accomplishing a set intention.
[NOT] THE LAW OF ATTRACTION
As much as you may or may not subscribe to it, the Law of Attraction has its limitations. That’s where Inevitability takes over.
Harnessing gratitude to tap into the flow is one thing. As we explore Inevitability, it’s more about eventualities that require effort.
No amount of manifestation can write a book for you or start a company. However, visualization may help attract the people, resources and opportunities you need.
In short, Inevitability involves the essence of the Human Spirit.
ALIGN YOUR DOMINOES
When people begin to formulate goals, they often view their current status in relation to each goal. They see themselves at Point A and their goal as Point B. Ideally, they define both points and develop an effective plan of action.
This approach is common with formal business planning – often based on the start-up period with 3, 6, 12 and 18 months that extend to long-term projections for 3, 5 10 years and beyond.
This traditional method has merit, especially for raising capital. However, our purpose here is less about a business entity as it is you, your why and your Earned Confidence .
One of the best ways to clarify an Inevitability is to break it down by visualizing dominos. Unlike business planning, your course of action will be a straighter line by drawing it from Point B as the starting point, then backward to Point A.
In other words, place the last domino first. Take your vision to the furthest point you can clearly see and adapt the unshakable self-belief to make it happen.
Now’s a good time to rely on the sensibility of “The Tipping Point,” conceived by Malcolm Gladwell. This does not refer to your first domino at Point A. The Tipping Point is the specific domino that, once tipped, makes certain the remaining dominos will fall until your Inevitability comes to fruition.
Essentially, it’s the point of never looking back. For start-up businesses, the common Tipping Point here is the domino that represents sustainable profitability.
As you deem something inevitable, be idealistic rather than factor “what ifs” into the equation. By eliminating randomness, it becomes possible to fold time by envisioning and expecting that inevitable outcome. This is especially so for those pursuing an Inevitability involving many years or even decades to realize.
For our purposes, setting an intention means becoming crystal clear about your goal, which represents Point B, and viewing it as being in your unimpeded line of sight. It’s right there on the horizon. If your arms were long enough, you could touch it.
CONVENTIONAL WISDOM
We are energy beings with an innate need to achieve, create, be challenged, contribute and have meaningful goals that bring us true fulfillment.
An Inevitability is bigger in the context of whatever that means to the person. It’s about total alignment and clarity as it relates to high-level aspirations.
So how might you identify a Point B that’s worthy of such effort and sacrifice? This is your vetting process to be certain your desire to make something inevitable actually exists.
One of the first considerations for achieving lofty goals is recognizing that it’s nearly impossible to achieve them alone. Be honest with yourself about what you do and do not know along with what you can and cannot do.
There’s also a factor of limited capacity. You may possess infinite willpower and belief, but the inevitable outcome you aim to achieve will take more than that.
Here’s a logical point to align your Inevitability with the guideline for S.M.A.R.T. goals, which you’ll find easy to investigate and apply:
● Specific
● Measurable
● Achievable
● Realistic
● Time-Bound
Given that your Point A is today, it’s sensible to align your actions, thoughts and emotions toward a desired way of being. This “intentionality” provides a mental framework to think before you act and live life on purpose.
WALKING THE TALK
In fairness, intentionality and Inevitability are about as heady as topics get. If you’ll kindly indulge a case in point, here’s mine:
With lasting effect, I will enrich the “Happierness” of at least 10 million people by 2030.
Specifically, this entails instilling people with a mindset that combines resilience and free will to be intentionally present and have a reflex of positivity by choosing to embrace the bright side however possible.
It’s still early. The foundation is in place with various initiatives and content, including 20+ issues of THE BRIGHT SIDE and 115+ episodes of Insights to Live By – The Podcast .
Behind the scenes are a second book (2026), at least two TEDx appearances, training programs and keynote speaking opportunities, such as the HR cruise this March (details below). With continued momentum, the dominoes are falling.
That seems to meet the S.M.A.R.T. criteria. Does it pass the Inevitability test? I believe so.
As much as passion fuels my motivation, I’m at least as averse to remorse. The way I see it, we get to choose one of two pains in life. We can stay in our comfort zone and allow fear to breed regret, or we can summon our courage and discipline to achieve our purpose.
As with Identity Shifting, applied Inevitability isn’t for everyone. This is what fills my cup and, for me, is worth all the sacrifice.
LET’S GET PRACTICAL
Inevitability is boundless, but here are some pointed questions to assure achievability and identify certain dominos with the potential to shorten the line from B to A.
Activity 1: Solidify Personal Goals
What are the three most important lessons you would want to have learned by the end of your life? What would you regret not doing? Why are they so critical? Is that potential regret enough to become your why?
Activity 2: Cast Your Vision
Think through every detail. Do you see obstacles or opportunities?
2. What resources do you anticipate needing to reach your destination? Is that money, manpower or perhaps knowledge you must acquire?
3. What skills do you need to gain and how? Is it best to collaborate with others? Who?
4. What opportunities can either shorten your row of dominos or advance you closer to your Tipping Point?
YOUR TIPPING POINT
Even if your dominos are in perfect order from Point B to Point A, making it happen still relies on your crystallized vision, willpower, dedication and intrinsic faith in the Inevitability you seek to actualize.
Maintain your unwavering expectation that you will make it happen. Better yet – now that you’re in action – it’s already happening!
Seek to identify which domino is the actual Tipping Point. Then, show up for work and proceed as if success is inevitable.
It is at the intersection of your purpose, your intention and your self-belief where you’ll find your Inevitability.
Throughout that journey, the choice to live on THE BRIGHT SIDE remains yours to experience.
