Part One: Harness Collective Human Intelligence to Drive Foundational Digital Transformation | LinkedIn
Introduction
In Part One, we explored the limitations of traditional IT Infrastructure (ITI) approaches and the importance of early solution design. In Part Two, we discussed the power of collective human intelligence and how collaborative approaches can create more effective and comprehensive ITI solutions. Now, in Part Three, let's examine how slowing down to speed up, overcoming resistance to change, and gaining a strategic advantage can transform your ITI and the business outcomes that rely on its agility, resiliency, and performance.
Slow Down to Speed Up
Transformation doesn't have to happen all at once. A phased migration approach allows us to optimize and modernize our ITI incrementally. By slowing things down and taking the proper steps, we can speed up the overall process and achieve greater value than the traditional "hurry up and fix it" mentality, which often overlooks exceptional value and increases costs and complexity. A proper approach involves systematically optimizing and modernizing existing platforms, operational functions, and services one project at a time, replacing foundational components with game-changing features that are well integrated into the ITI landscape. This method creates a more dynamic and adaptable IT environment that better meets business needs.
For example, in our disaster recovery example (see Part One), we can start by retooling with technology that is cross-platform capable, but also addresses the unique needs of other ITI operational areas such as production platforms and cybersecurity. By incorporating this broader perspective into the solution design, we are setup to quickly and effectively integrate new solutions with other ITI arenas over time. This approach not only minimizes disruption but also maximizes long-term value. By taking the time to create comprehensive ITI solutions, we ultimately save time and reduce costs, ensuring a more effective and efficient outcome.
Overcoming Resistance to Change
One of the biggest challenges in digital transformation is overcoming resistance to change. Many organizations prefer to stick with familiar methods, even if they are less effective. As the leader of your IT team, you may clearly see the value in a more comprehensive design phase, but getting buy-in from your team can feel a lot like a root canal procedure.
To succeed, the design phase must naturally build a unique rapport that allows your team to see and feel the value of a new approach. It’s not as simple as fostering a growth mindset or encouraging a culture of continuous improvement—common advice that often falls short. Instead, it's about walking through the process with them, involving them in every step of the design phase, and respecting and leveraging the unique perspectives within the group. This approach brings them into the fold, allowing them to feel real ownership and pride in what is designed and what can be built.
In short, facilitating design sessions with a diverse group not only breaks down resistance but also significantly reduces time requirements compared to traditional methods. With the guidance of a facilitator, the outcome value exceeds expectations. By involving people from different areas, we ensure that all perspectives are considered, resulting in a well-rounded and robust final solution. This collaborative approach helps build buy-in and support for the project, making implementation smoother and more successful.
The Strategic Advantage
Organizations that adopt a collective intelligence approach gain a significant strategic advantage. By integrating new services, tools, and processes across platforms, they can create a more agile and responsive ITI landscape. This agility allows them to quickly adapt to changing business needs and leverage new technologies for innovation and growth.
Moreover, a well-integrated ITI environment supports faster time-to-market for new initiatives. This speed is crucial in today's competitive landscape, where businesses must continuously innovate to stay ahead. By future-proofing their ITI systems, organizations can ensure they are always ready to meet new challenges and seize opportunities.
What's Next...
As we continue to explore the potential of collective human intelligence, it's essential to test this out in the appropriate setting and context. The ITI landscape offers a unique opportunity to demonstrate that this approach can yield significant returns on effort, resulting in savings rather than additional investment.
