Air travel has not traditionally been recognized as environmentally friendly, but the world can’t live without it. Human travel and freight are essential for today’s economy and life. Therefore, most aircraft manufacturers have made strides towards limiting their carbon footprint and reducing acoustic impact in areas around airports. GKD has been fortunate to partner with aircraft manufacturers in achieving these environmental goals.

IMPROVING AERODYNAMICS

The work started with helping institutes and R+D facilities improve aerodynamics in their wind tunnels. GKDs anti-turbulence screens and solutions for boundary layer suction are helping worldwide to increase the quality of aerodynamic test in these facilities. Our expertise in screen installation on site is also a critical part of this service.

LIGHTNING STRIKE PROTECTION

Have you have flown recently with Airbus? If so, you were protected from lightning strike hazard by GKD media. Of all the strategies used to reduce CO2 emissions in aircrafts, a major factor is reducing the weight of the aircraft. Therefore, newer aircrafts contain a high number of composite parts to achieve a lighter weight. However, composite components based on fiberglass (GRP) or carbon (CRP) must be protected from lightning strikes through the use of conductive metal mesh when used in aviation applications or wind turbines.

Depending on the potential hazard resulting from the geometry or installation situation of these components, several GKD wire meshes made of aluminum, copper or bronze are available in various weights. GKD is an active, qualified supplier for a wide series of lightning strike media that are used in today’s aircrafts and helicopters.

ACOUSTIC IMPROVEMENT

Aircrafts, especially older models, create a lot of engine noise. GKD acoustic media help reduce the sound intensity with custom technical meshes which are applied in nacelles and thrust reversers. GKD is a widely approved and qualified supplier for many OEMs that fabricate these parts for the aircraft industry.

GKD doesn’t stop there. Many of these applications and the expertise gained in developing the right media for the right application is actively transferred into other industries such as the automotive and electronics industry.
