Achieving IMO's Decarbonization Goals : Carbon capturing system.

Eastern Pacific Shipping?and?Value Maritime?have installed the world's first fully integrated carbon capture solution on the MR tanker, M/T Pacific Cobalt. The innovative project is a first for ocean-going ships to date and seeks to open the door for widespread industry adoption.

?A large tanker from Eastern Pacific Shipping is equipped with Value Maritime's Filtree system onboard M/T Pacific Cobalt in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The Filtree system includes Value Maritime's?Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) module, which can capture up to 40% of CO2 emissions from the ship's main and auxiliary engines in addition to filtering 99% of particulate matter and Sulphur.

?The CO2 is captured in a special chemical and stored in an onboard tank that has been specially coated and modified for this function as part of the retrofit. More than 200 tonnes of CO2 can be captured in a single voyage with the tank's current storage capacity. When the tank is full, the chemical will be pumped out in the port and transported to end users, like greenhouses or manufacturers of synthetic fuel, who can release the CO2 on demand.?Carbon sequestration networks can also be used to store CO2. The chemical?will then be brought back to the vessel?for re-use and to continue CO2 capture.

"2023 is a pivotal year for the maritime sector," said Eastern Pacific Shipping CEO Cyril Ducau.

We must start pushing the needle immediately to meet the IMO 2050 and net zero objectives. We have been creating a portfolio of solutions across several vessel types to guarantee that we can make a big difference. Sophisticated decarbonization technology, such as Value Maritime's CCS system, provides a real solution that can be installed on current boats. As a consequence, carbon emissions are reduced immediately, without the need to wait for the construction and rationalization of alternative green fuel infrastructure.

"Certainly, 2023 is the year of transformation for sustainable shipping," says Value Maritime Co-Founder & Director Maarten Lodewijks.

EPS is leading the push among shipping businesses that have already begun moving to a more environmentally friendly fleet. Thanks to them, we could offer our filtration and carbon capture technology to the tanker industry. Particular gratitude should be extended to the installation team, who performed this project on time and with the highest expertise. The prefabricated gas filtering system installation began in Rotterdam in mid-January 2023. It took 17 days to complete and was managed collaboratively by EPS, VM sea, and shore personnel.
