Achieving A Circular Economy - Reduce

This is the ninth in a series of ten articles discussing and factualizing the current and critical future state of our global supply and demand chain, especially as it relates to the Telecom and IT Industry.

?9 – Smarter Supply Chain – Reduce

?Last time you went to buy a car, how many options were there for the engine, wheels, trim, auto or stick, body colour, entertainment, accessories, the list goes on? Manufacturers have a desire to create exactly what consumers want, it’s expected. If I like blue cars, I want blue cars, not to be fobbed of with “white is the new blue”. Not to suggest we go back to Model-T Ford days, “any colour you want as long as its black”, but...

?FACT: Five basic colours account for 86% of all cars on the road with white, black and grey making greater than 75%.

?Telecoms is heading the same way with one major OEM having more than 200 models of LTE base stations. That’s 200 to design, build, ship, 200 to plan a network with, 200 to maintain and 200 to reuse. Yet from that 200+ only 10% can be considered as regular use and account for 80% of the demand.

?OEMs need to create simpler designs with more flexibility in software driven configuration, allowing a greatly reduced product line and easier migration. Reducing options may cause some initial frustrations but in time the demand will match the supply in these terms and substantial gains will be made in materials use and reuse.
