Achieving the American Dream with Hock Tan of Broadcom – Episode 27 of “Chambers Talks: A Podcast Series with John Chambers”

The term “The American Dream” was coined in the last century by James Truslow Adams – yet, the concept of #TheAmericanDream has been the ethos of the U.S. since the beginning. Many today believe that this “Dream” is dead but I would argue in many ways that we are reigniting it with entrepreneurship, innovation, and technology.

For my good friend Hock Tan, President and CEO of Broadcom Inc. (Cc: Broadcom Software) who joined me for the latest episode of my #ChambersTalks #podcast, the American Dream is very much alive and well. He points to the many bright, ambitious young people from around the globe who continue to favor the U.S. as a destination for study. Speaking from personal experience, Hock shares how he set out more than 50 years ago from his birth country of Malaysia to come to the U.S. in pursuit of a great education and more opportunities – and also adventure.

The personal stories Hock shares during our conversation are candid, thoughtful, and inspiring. He credits the mentorship and opportunities he received along the way – and a willingness on his part to simply try – for the success he has found in building his own American Dream. Having accomplished that and much more since then, Hock is a passionate advocate of giving back to schools to help keep the Dream alive for others. Hock is focused on the importance of further diversifying and expanding our country’s talent pool, which is critical if we want to continue to think differently and lead global market transitions.
