Hello and welcome to the Mindset Code newsletter, where we share tips and tricks on how to improve your mindset and achieve your goals. In this edition, we will talk about how to use the 5 second rule to overcome your fear of public speaking.
Public speaking is one of the most common and challenging fears that many people face. Whether it is giving a presentation at work, delivering a speech at a wedding, or participating in a debate, public speaking can cause anxiety, nervousness, and stress. However, public speaking is also a valuable skill that can help you advance your career, communicate your ideas, and influence others. Therefore, it is important to learn how to overcome your fear of public speaking and become more confident and effective in your speech.
One of the best ways to overcome your fear of public speaking is to use a simple technique that can help you take action on your goals and overcome your fears. It is based on the idea that if you have an instinct to act on a goal, you must physically move within 5 seconds or your brain will kill it. In other words, you have to act before your mind has a chance to talk you out of it.
This technique works by interrupting your habitual patterns of thinking and behavior and creating a window of opportunity for you to take action. It also helps you to focus on your goal and what you want to achieve instead of what you fear or what could go wrong. By using this technique, you can overcome your fears, doubts, and excuses and start doing the things that matter to you.
Alex is a team lead in a software company who wants to improve his communication skills and become more confident in presenting his ideas to his boss and clients. However, he often feels nervous and intimidated when he has to speak in front of others. He worries that he will forget what to say, make mistakes, or lose his audience’s attention. He also fears that his boss and clients will not like his ideas or proposals.
Alex decides to use the 5 second rule to overcome his fear of public speaking. He knows that public speaking is a valuable skill that can help him advance his career, communicate his ideas, and influence others. He also knows that he has a lot of knowledge and experience that he can share with others. He wants to become more confident and effective in his speech.
Every time he has an opportunity to share his thoughts or feedback in a meeting, he counts down from 5 to 1 in his head: 5-4-3-2-1. As soon as he reaches 1, he moves. He raises his hand or speaks up. He does not let his mind stop him or talk him out of it. He expresses his opinions and suggestions clearly and confidently. He also listens to others and responds to their questions and comments.
