Achieve success with a simple mindset shift
Carin Forsling
Managing Director & Partner at Boston Consulting Group (BCG), Nordic Lead of Tech & Digital Practise
You are a physicist by education, now turned management consultant focusing on large scale digital and data driven transformations. What sparked your interest in working in tech??
I’m driven by the possibility to drive a positive change – with data and digital, there is so much potential to unlock! I also love complex problems and working together in multi-disciplinary teams. My passion really is about making change happen – getting people onboard, empowering and enabling them to do more, in a more sustainable way.??
As an experienced leader of multi-disciplinary teams, what should leaders bring to the table that’s helping them drive better performance??
It starts with curiosity. Listening well, getting to know each other – understanding differences and commonalities. Being caring and kind. Letting go of your ego. Driving towards better outcomes for the team as a whole. It’s so much more fun!??
Have you personally experienced biases in tech, and if so, how did you combat them??
I’ve both studied and worked in fields with less women, so I guess I am used to it. I see such a positive movement now with highly diverse teams - or the desire to create such. I can’t think of a specific situation – but I’d typically try to call it out, with a smile – and often people weren’t aware. It’s an awareness and learning journey!??
Are there differences in being a leader to GenZ/Millennials/older age groups in your opinion? If so, what are they??
For sure. We see a massive – positive – change in expectations from the newer generations; more purposeful work, sustainability – individually and for the planet, mental health. It’s less about the money. This creates higher requirements for leaders to really unlock talent and re-imagine how we work.??

You are leading BCG’s next generation ways of working – what are these and why are they important, specifically working in tech??
In short, it’s about re-imaging how we work, to drive more impact in a more sustainable way. It’s about embracing a value mindset and removing waste, integrated teaming (no labels), iterative ways of working and co-creation, fostering a culture where people can be themselves, thrive, and grow – and last but not least, empowering the teams with tools that help them do all of this in a smarter way.
This is even more important in tech, because we typically must really unlock the power of very diverse skillsets to solve the unknown and go beyond.??
Have you ever felt the imposter syndrome, and if so, how did you navigate your way through it??
I think it always helps to know that you don’t need the answers. You just need the questions. And then you work your way through them, by engaging people around you. Embracing a true growth mindset gets you far, fast!?
What has been your most career-defining moment that you are proud of??
To be honest, many ?? I like to celebrate big and small moments – and encourage that in teams I am part of. For me personally, I’d actually say having our son. It makes you a better person, at work too, to have clear priorities outside work.??
Who has been an influential person in your career so far, and what advice did they give you??
Again, many! I try to ask a lot of questions, crowd-source advice, and observe from people around me.
Once in a bit of a “job crisis”, a senior leader told me “Why don’t you just work much less hours?”. I started that and noticed that my outcomes didn’t go down - maybe even the opposite. I am so appreciative for that advice and push!??
loved the way you answered, very positive.
