I’d like to thank my colleague and fellow coach, @Andre Boykin for this great analogy, which is the title of one of his keynote speeches.
Imagine a caterpillar. As it grows, it's changing (quantitative shift) - getting bigger, molting its skin. These are all necessary steps, but the caterpillar is still fundamentally a caterpillar.
Now, picture that caterpillar transforming (qualitative leap) into a butterfly. This is transformation. It's a dramatic shift that creates entirely new possibilities. The butterfly can now fly, a feat impossible for the caterpillar.

5 个月I think you have illustrated an important distinction. When change and transformation are collapsed to be the same, transformation is being minimalized from the great impact it has. Transformation is huge. I'm not saying change is not important; it is. And transformation opens up a whole new arena for what is possible. Along the sane thought, is it possible to have something that is new and improved?

5 个月Great article, Shari. Adaptive change really resonated with me. Digging into motivation and recognizing resistance are significant first steps. As you point out, so many people need to do the hard work of identifying the root cause of hesitation. One thing I've been focusing on is taking action. James Clear stated, "Action produces momentum," and I think that is such a paradigm shift for so many people, including me! It certainly makes the "experimentation" so much easier.
