To achieve global gender equality, we need to overcome societal stereotypes and assumptions
Every society, every culture has gender norms and expectations. These are established early and reinforced by family, friends, school, the media and society and many other influencers. Some are positive. But some can be limiting, putting us into boxes and limiting our potential and the world of possibilities today and for the future.
Gender expression, – how we express masculinity and femininity – changes over time and varies by culture. It is a complex topic. Understanding what drives our perceptions of gender is one of the key steps in supporting global gender equality.
That’s why I am happy to share PwC has joined forces with the United Nations to develop the new ‘Building Gender IQ’ training. The online course is part of our work as a HeForShe Corporate Impact Champion and is aimed at educating people on how unconscious assumptions can shape gender norms, roles and relations. It describes the impact of global gender inequality at home, school, and work – and encourages people to develop personal commitments to promote global gender equality.
Gender equality is a basic human right that everyone should exercise and everyone should benefit from. Yet no country has achieved it.
One thing is clear: by understanding gender better, we can help overcome societal stereotypes and assumptions and act in a way that helps ourselves and others reach our individual and collective potential.
As Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Executive Director of UN Women, puts it, “Taking this course is an eye opener that broadens the stereotypical ways people usually look at gender. We see this course as a way to spark new conversations, whether in corporate boardrooms or student classrooms or in the houses of governments. We hope this new tool will inspire change among both individuals and organizations.” I encourage you to take the course and let me know what you think. It is available here.

8 年Gender inequality is not normal! So many people choose to believe that there is an equality because we have a few female leaders in politics and in board-rooms. The very fact remains that, gender inequality is very common, wide spread and far reaching in its impact. In particular, gender inequality, is a consequence of many problems that affect the world over. I need not look far for examples...Women despite being highly educated than any other time in recorded history are disproportionately earning less than men for the same job!
