There are pros and cons to each social media platform and as a self-employed person, I feel the need to have a “presence” on multiple venues to attract different potential clients.
It is also the fact that each platform brings out different parts of my personality which largely consist of me not liking social media or technology.
Almost anyone I know that grew up with The Breakfast Club as a current movie, not just the call back from Pitch Perfect, has used its characters as a personality decoder.
I talk to these friends, most of us are in our mid-40s now, we tend to assign different characters to different times in our life or blend together two or more so accurately describe ourselves, who we are dating, and who we want to be.
I, of course, am Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy, and currently, I think people perceive me to be Anthony Michael Hall and Judd Nelson. As I age, I assume I will become more and more like Emilio Esteves and Anthony Michael Hall. The Princess, The Weirdo, The Nerd, The Rebel. Note The Jock doesn’t register with me, so I married one.
The social media platforms seem to target a kind of user to do a certain kind of connecting, in a particular manner. Perhaps what we need to learn from Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram, and LinkedIn, is just like the Breakfast Club.
No matter what, it is the connection that matters. We must cross our boundaries and re-write our expectations to truly connect with someone. Then anything is possible.
Sincerely,
The Breakfast Club
